The 2016 d’Armailhac, which was bottled in May 2018, has an elegant bouquet that unfolds in the glass, offering blackberries, briar and a touch of cedar and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with dense tannin, grippy in the mouth, and quite voluminous, with perhaps more density on the solid, almost broad-shouldered finish compared to the Clerc-Milon. This fulfills all my expectations from my barrel tasting and is quite simply one of the best d’Armailhac wines ever made. Drink 2022-2040

This is a really driven d’Armailhac showing blackcurrants and fruit tea with hints of bark on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, very firm and structured with a long and powerful finish. Direct and linear. Try after 2023.

Written Notes

Deep, rich purple color. An intense nose with jammy portlike notes - licorice, blackberry and cassis. Full-bodied and rich palate with soft tannins and ripe jammy fruitiness. Pronounced Christmas spicy aromas. Abundant, generous and extremely charming wine. Long harmonious aftertaste. This appealing flamboyant style reminds distantly "Napa" style cabs. Very atypical for d'Armailhac which is known for its feminine and moderately light savoury style. For me this is one of the best d'Armailhac I've ever had. Drinking well already but will show layers after 5-10 years cellaring. JL 91p (3/2020)

Deep colour. Intense blackcurrant graphite aromas with savoury mocha oak notes. Concentrated dark cherry, cassis flavours, beautiful ultra-fine grainy textures and underlying mocha espresso oak. Finishes slinky and long. A very glossy buoyant wine with vigour and complexity. Tasted at the Union de Grand Crus. This is punching well above it weight when it comes to price quality ratio. On eof my picks of the vintage. Tasted at the Union des Grand Crus and Chateau Mouton Rothschild. 97 points

Dark purple red with violet hue. Elegant nose with fragrant fruit, blackberries and blackcurrants, hints of cedar wood and vanilla. On the palate well structured with mature tannins, freshness and fine acidity, complex flavour and excellent length. 93

Ruby. Fruity, blackberries, spices, anise, detailed, blueberries, intense nose, seductive. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins. Fruity, juicy, ripe, red and dark berries, exotic, ripe, dark berries and spices, stunning effort from Armailhac this vintage, with a Mouton profile. So if Mouton is out of your league, look no further. 93-95
