The 2004 Monfortino steals the show in this flight. I have always loved the 2004 and that continues to this day. Arguably one of the most sensual, exotic and finessed Monfortinos ever made, the 2004 is all about harmony. Nothing sticks out. Instead, all I want is another taste. Then another…just to revel in the wine's total seamlessness and profoundness. This is as good as wine gets. Not in Piedmont or Italy, but anywhere. Tasted from magnum.

Score: 100 Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, May 2014

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is drop-dead gorgeous. I have tasted the wine multiple times from barrel and three times from bottle and never been anything less than blown away. The 2004 is a subtle, layered Monfortino that captures the sheer elegance and finesse of this great vintage. It is sweet, perfumed, silky and utterly mind-blowing. From barrel it has always been a 100 point wine, but it has just been bottled and naturally a bit closed in on itself. Still, with some time in the glass its silky, perfumed fruit and dazzling class come to life. The 2004 is remarkably harmonious for such a young wine. Readers will have much fun debating which is the greatest Monfortino of recent years. Could it be the 1996, 1999 or 2002 for their huge structure and classicism? Or, is it the 1997 for its opulence? What if the dark horse 1998 and 2000 steal the show? Personally, I adore the 2001 and 2004 for their completeness, but the 2004 is the sexiest of them all. Sadly, 2004 is also the year Giovanni Conterno passed away, but one can't escape the feeling his spirit lives in this wine. Kudos to Roberto Conterno and his team for this magnificent, thrilling Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2044.

The Story

Conterno’s Monfortino is a heavyweight contender for the best Barolo around, and it definitely has our vote. It’s a matchless experience of power paired with subtlety and the effect is quite seductive. As it opens, you’ll experience classic hints of rose, earthy black truffles, cigar box, and anise in a boldly structured wine that’s still quite fresh.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous said it’s a “magnificent” wine that “explodes from the glass with a luxurious, expansive personality that leaves me speechless.” The lucky people who share this bottle with you likely will never forget it.

Monfortino is the very first Barolo made in what has come to be known as the classic style. Earlier Barolos were generally sold in either cask or demijohn, and meant for early drinking. Giacomo decided to create a Barolo with great aging potential. His first wine wine was a 120 Barolo Riserva, and he soon adopted the name Monfortino in honor of his home village Montorte d'Alba.
In 1959 Giovanni Conterno began making the wine at his family domaine, taking over from his father Giacomo. The legendary Barolos he made in 1964, 1971, 1978, 1985 and 1990 have left their mark in Italian wine history.

Written Notes

Barolo Riserva Monfortino 2004 Very fine nose filled with flowers, raw mushrooms, tar, dried strawberries, Asian spices, fennel, anise, menthol and dried rose hip. Very elegant, deep and layered. Seductive to say the least. Medium bodied with superb focus and structure. Absolutely seamless from start to the very very long finish. Surprisingly open already and it’s all here. Both fresh and dried roses, dried strawberries, Asian spices, fennel, mint and dried herbs. Builds even stronger on the finish and sings with flowers, minerals and dried raspberries. A stunning wine that puts you in a meditative mode. Can absolutely score higher when it matures. The Romanée-Contí of Italy. Always magical! 2019-2040 98p
