The Story

During the 40s, 50s and 60s, the Conternos could produce their epic Barolos by relying on small, independent farmers who worked their old, low-yielding vines. But by the 1970s, those farmers began increasingly to make their own wines. Threatened with the loss of their fruit sources, Giovanni acquired Serralungas great Cascina Francia vineyard. With its fabulous exposure, and predominately calcareous soil, the site was perfect for the power...

Written Notes

Silky, fleshy, and loaded with ripe, brambly fruit, the ’09 Cascina Francia appears to offer earlier approachability than it usually does--and certainly much earlier than Monfortino; in fact, the estate decided not to make Monfortino in ’09, putting all its fruit into the sublime Barolo Cascina Francia. Succulent fruit is underlain by a mineral core and framed with cigar wrapper, fresh-cut herbs, eucalyptus and spice in this wine that morphs beautifully as it moves across the palate. The estate makes its Cascina Francia with natural yeasts, temperature controlled fermentation and a lengthy maceration of 3-4 weeks; after this, the wine ages in large Slavonian botti and in bottle for a total of four years. This is a must-have Barolo bottling for real aficionados

The Cascina Francia Barolo from Giacomo Conterno is aged in large oak casks for at least four years before bottling and is one of the formidable Barolos of the region that will only improve with age. This comes from a generously fruited vintage that is particularly giving in its youth but will work even better with decades of bottle aging.

Some herbs, tar, roses, cherries, morellos, anise. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, ripe and fruity, lacks nuances, fruity and a bit warm. Long. 90

Barolo Cascina Francia 2009 (barrel) Open and intense nose with very fine wild forest fruit, with hints of mushrooms, pine cones, balsamic notes and warm stones. Med body, intense sweet dark fruit, raw mushrooms, pure smooth, cassis and balsamic notes. Very long and fresh with concentrated and mineral driven finish. Just so seamless and elegant. Superb! 2019-2030 93
