At this stage, the wine of the vintage, with an amazingly dark, rich, plush core of currant, spice, black cherry and blackberry. Deliciously elegant, with supple, subtle flavor nuances and extra flavor dimensions. Shows no sign of fatigue; the debut vintage was no fluke. (5/2003)

The Story

“First and foremost, I will be perpetuating the fresh, delicate style of wine that has been the Screaming Eagle hallmark since 1992. Across two winemakers before me (Heidi and Andy), that style has stayed remarkably consistent, which is part of the uniqueness of this ranch. The character of the vineyard really asserts itself. What will be new is the discovery of the young vine plots, and the ways that we can farm them individually to get the b...

Wine Information

After terrible winter floods, 1986 was another early vintage in Napa Valley. The flowering season, early due to several consecutive heat waves, was already advanced when estate agent Jean Phillips arrived at a vineyard by the Silverado Trail and Oakville Crossroad. With her experience of numerous properties and vineyards, Phillips senses something extraordinary and magical there. She realises she wants this ranch for herself.

Written Notes

The 1992 vintage marks the inaugural release from Screaming Eagle Winery & Vineyards in Oakville, Napa Valley, and is widely regarded as one of the most historically significant American cult Cabernets ever made. It was the estate’s first vintage, released a few years later in 1995, and immediately garnered **near-perfect scores from top critics—most famously 99 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate—helping launch Screaming Eagle into instant cult status. Production was minuscule (approximately 175–200 cases), and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered and aged heavily in new French oak, cementing its rarity and collector appeal.

Appearance: Deep garnet-ruby with persistent youthful depth for its age; some garnet nuances at the rim reflecting its maturity.

Nose: Remarkably expressive for a nearly 35-year-old wine. Layers of ripe dark fruit—blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum reduction—are intertwined with savory forest floor, truffle, leather, and tobacco leaf. Secondary notes of dried herbs, cedar box, and subtle toasty oak add complexity without overwhelming. Despite its age, there remains an element of freshness and dark spice.

Palate: Dry, medium-to-full bodied with extraordinary balance and integration. The mature fruit core delivers nuanced layers of dark berry reduction, sweet spice, and savory earth. Tannins have softened into a fine, rounded frame, supporting rather than dominating the profile. Acid remains lively enough to lend structure, while tertiary notes of leather, mushroom, and cedar interplay with lingering cassis and black tea.

Finish: Long and refined with graceful persistence—dark fruit, savory spice, cedar, and earth all echo toward a measured close.

Overall: A legendary debut from one of Napa’s most storied cult producers. Screaming Eagle 1992 exemplifies early Napa cult Cabernet at its most iconic—intensely concentrated yet now showing elegant maturity and layered complexity. Given its age and rarity, this wine is best appreciated now, with tertiary nuances at the fore.

Serving: 16–18 °C with gentle decanting (30–60 min) to allow old-world nuances to open.

Pairing: Slow-roasted beef, lamb with herbs, aged hard cheeses, or truffle-accented dishes.

Drinking Window: Now–2028 (peak tertiary expression; further aging offers nuance rather than structural gains).

The 1992 Screaming Eagle was a fascinating follow up to the pair of Petruses. It actually had a little Petrus character to it. Hints of game and fig jumped out at first, followed by black cherry fruit, coffee and a touch of olive. It was full of exotic spices. The palate had great game and spice flavors, and more coffee. That kiss of Cali sweetness was not over the top and rather refined here, and its tangy cassis and grainy cedar qualities were joined by exotic blueberry. Gil found it more ‘huckleberry, exotic raspberry coulis and a peach schnapps finish.’ It was long and delicious and could hang in the same flight as the Petrus, although the Petruses kept getting better while the Screamer stood pat, and if anything started to soften (95).
