91 points Wine Spectator

Dark, ripe, intense and concentrated, with lots of currant, earth, leather and anise flavors. Comes across as a rustic, concentrated style with a chewy core of flavors. Finishes with a dry tannic edge and gritty tannins.  (12/1996)

The Story

“First and foremost, I will be perpetuating the fresh, delicate style of wine that has been the Screaming Eagle hallmark since 1992. Across two winemakers before me (Heidi and Andy), that style has stayed remarkably consistent, which is part of the uniqueness of this ranch. The character of the vineyard really asserts itself. What will be new is the discovery of the young vine plots, and the ways that we can farm them individually to get the b...

Written Notes

The 1993 Screaming Eagle is the second vintage of this iconic Napa cult Cabernet Sauvignon, following the legendary 1992 debut. Like its predecessor, production was extraordinarily small (around 125–175 cases), contributing to its rarity and early collector status. Crafted under winemaker Heidi Barrett, the 1993 was highly regarded by critics, earning 97 points from The Wine Advocate and establishing itself as one of the standout early vintages of the estate.

Appearance: Deep opaque purple-garnet core with youthful saturation for its age; still vibrant and visually enticing.

Nose: Rich and concentrated. Complex aromas of blackcurrant and cassis are interwoven with notes of mineral spice, high-quality oak, and layered dark fruit compote. Subtle hints of anise, tobacco leaf, and earth add breadth while maintaining purity and intensity.

Palate: Dry, medium-to-full bodied with a lush, opulent texture. The palate delivers concentrated dark fruit flavors—blackberry, cassis, and plum—framed by savory mineral undertones and supported by sweet, integrated tannins. Oak spice and gentle cocoa nuances round out the mid-palate, adding warmth and complexity.

Finish: Long and balanced, with persistent dark fruit, spice, and mineral echoes. The structure remains impressive, suggesting extended enjoyment now or over the next few years.

Overall: A compelling example of early-era Screaming Eagle—rich and concentrated yet balanced with refined oak and fruit purity. While not as structurally monumental as later cult vintages, the 1993 retains energy, depth, and elegance that reward careful drinking and moderate cellaring.

Serving: 16–18 °C. Decanting (30–60 min) recommended to open tertiary nuances and integrate mature components.

Pairing: Braised short ribs, grilled lamb chops, roasted venison, or rich mushroom ragù.

Drinking Window (estimate): Now–2030+, with current tertiary development but still enjoyable depth and balance.
