The Story

“First and foremost, I will be perpetuating the fresh, delicate style of wine that has been the Screaming Eagle hallmark since 1992. Across two winemakers before me (Heidi and Andy), that style has stayed remarkably consistent, which is part of the uniqueness of this ranch. The character of the vineyard really asserts itself. What will be new is the discovery of the young vine plots, and the ways that we can farm them individually to get the b...

Wine Information

The Screaming Eagle is the world’s most spoken about cult wine. In 15 short years, the wine, produced in miniscule quantities in a shed in Oakville, has become a wine lover’s ultimate dream to taste. It is not just its rarity that makes this wine taste different to others. It is the charmingly refined style that makes Screaming Eagle so appealing, with its satiny tannins, vivid acidity and very sophisticated fruitiness. It is not a big blockbu...

Written Notes

The 1994 vintage for Screaming Eagle sits within the early golden era of this cult Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Following the inaugural 1992 and 1993 releases, the 1994 embodies the estate’s early style: refined yet concentrated fruit, satiny tannins, and vivid acidity, with extremely limited production that fuels its rarity and collector demand. It regularly earns top scores from critics and enthusiasts alike, reflecting both its quality and historic significance.

Appearance: Deep ruby with lingering purple edges; mature saturation with excellent brilliance for its age.

Nose: Elegant and rich, boasting concentrated crème de cassis, blackberry, and dark plum aromas, supported by cedar, tobacco leaf, and graphite minerality. Subtle oak spice and savory earth notes weave through, adding complexity while maintaining freshness and serenity.

Palate: Dry, medium-to-full bodied with a seamless, lush texture. The concentrated black fruit core—blackcurrant, plum, and dark cherry—is balanced by refined acidity and supple tannins. Mineral undertones and hints of pencil lead, anise, and cedar lend depth without heaviness. The wine’s structure remains poised and harmonious rather than overtly powerful.

Finish: Long and polished, echoing dark fruit, spice, gentle cedar, and a whisper of earthiness—elegant and persistent.

Overall: A superb example of early Screaming Eagle—refined, complex, and beautifully integrated. The 1994 vintage showcases lush fruit expression and silky texture while preserving the freshness and precision that define cult Napa Cabernet. Now showing tertiary nuances, this is a wine best enjoyed in maturity.

Serving: 16–18 °C with gentle decanting (30–60 min) to open tertiary complexity.

Pairing: Herb-crusted lamb, grilled ribeye, roasted venison, or aged hard cheeses.

Drinking Window (estimate): 2024–2032 (tertiary expression prominent).

Seamless and supple, this wine had everyone fooled when it was served blind at a Petrus dinner. Most people were guessing different vintages of Petrus. Not one sign of over-ripeness or jammy flavors here despite the warm vintage. Elegant, subtle, generous and very long on the finish. Simple gorgeous.
