Vinous 100 Points: “The 2019 Screaming Eagle is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse that stand apart from the generally more potent style of so many wines in this vintage. Deep, sensual, and beautifully layered, the 2019 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. A whole range of red/purplish fruit, spice, leather, dried herb, and blood orange accents give the 2019 its vivid, wonderfully detailed personality. Because of its price...

The Story

“First and foremost, I will be perpetuating the fresh, delicate style of wine that has been the Screaming Eagle hallmark since 1992. Across two winemakers before me (Heidi and Andy), that style has stayed remarkably consistent, which is part of the uniqueness of this ranch. The character of the vineyard really asserts itself. What will be new is the discovery of the young vine plots, and the ways that we can farm them individually to get the b...

Screaming Eagle 2019 – Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2019 vintage in Napa Valley offered a long, steady growing season with moderate conditions, yielding wines of elegance, balance, and vibrancy. The 2019 Screaming Eagle shines with pristine aromatics of blackberry, cassis, and blueberry, layered with graphite, violet, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is both powerful and finely etched—concentrated dark fruit framed by ultra-fine tannins and lifted by a lively mineral thread. The finish is seamless, pure, and remarkably persistent.

Because of its price, both on release and in the secondary market, Screaming Eagle is the most talked about wine in Napa Valley. It is hype or not? All I can say is that I was very fortunate to drink a number of older vintages during lockdown and all those wines lived up to their reputations.

Inside Information

Here is the 2019 vintage, described by the renowned critic, James Suckling, as follows, "Lots of crushed berries, such as raspberries and blackberries, with spearmint and crushed stone, as well as redcurrants. Full-bodied with regal tannins that build on the palate as you taste it and flow over like a gentle waterfall. Such a beautiful, subtle and graceful texture. Best after 2027."
