History

Château de Pressac, a “Grand Cru Classé” of the world renowned and exceptional appellation of Saint Emilion, rises above the hillock, called a “tertre” locally, situated at Saint Etienne de Lisse, to the east of Saint Emilion, facing south.
The property covers 40 hectares in a single, continuous block, of which 36 hectares are planted in vines.

Dominique and Jean-François Quenin have been the fortunate proprietors since 1997 and produce wines of elegance, which fully express the excellence of the terroir of Château de Pressac.

It was during Autumn 2012, at the time of the new classification of Saint Emilion, that Château de Pressac was promulgated to the appellation of Grand Cru Classé de Saint Emilion (Classified Great Growth). This classification is supervised by the INAO (National Institute of Origin and of Quality – previously called the National Institute of Appellations of Origin) and requires the presentation of a complete presentation consisting of a case file containing documentation and in depth information about the quality of the wine, the terroir, the viticultural and vinification practices, the maintenance procedures in both the vines and the cellars, the material and equipment in use, etc. Consequently, this prestigious classification rewards and confirms the property’s perpetual efforts to improve the quality of its wine from this specific appellation.

Vineyards

Château de Pressac is situated in the commune of Saint Etienne de Lisse. The vines of the château are established on the limestone plateau of Saint Emilion, rising to 80 metres above the level of the Dordogne River.
Pressac is an estate covering 42 hectares in one continuous block of land, of which 36 hectares of vines share 3 different types of soil: the plateau, the slopes of the hills and the foot of the hillside.

The Pressac terraced vineyards are spectacular indeed! These vineyards are situated on the hilltops facing south and have undergone extensive renovation and maintenance work.
Vineyard terracing combats erosion as well as the damage caused by the gullies that form on the slopes. It also offers an economy of space and, in turn, this facilitates the landscaping and layout management of the rows of vines.

Château de Pressac Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé Le VignobleThe Slopes of the Hills and the Foot of the Hillside:

The geography, the gradient of the hills and the continuous, if more gentle, sloping towards the foot of the hillside, promote the flow of water in the case of heavy rain, thus avoiding excess water retention. The draining of water takes place without hindrance or obstruction.

Winemaking

After the hand picking of the grapes into small crates, the grapes are completely (100%) destemmed before passing along a triple sorting table. One of these tables being a density sorting table.
The different stages of vinification integrate the latest developments in wine making technology. This includes, amongst other processes, a system by which the different fermentation vats are filled entirely by gravity. At the same time, another innovation is the original system of robotic and hydraulic punching down that are installed in the concrete fermentation vats. At the same time, all fermentation vats are equipped with a system of thermo-regulation.

Maturing occurs in barrels of which 65% are renewed every year and takes place over a period of twelve months.

Today, after a decade of uninterrupted efforts and improvements in the quality, the wines of Château de Pressac have attained recognition as “Great Classed Growth” wines combining charm, power and elegance. Their typicity and their authenticity have been recompensed rightfully in the 2012 Saint Emilion classification, which upgraded the property to “Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé”.(Le Figaro)
