The Story

Strikingly similar conditions in terms of weather and yields to the previous vintage. Very low yields of 1.39 tonne/hectare with no rain in January, February and until the end of harvest in March. One big difference was the Marri blossom which did not flower until after the harvest causing bird pressure. This is a wine of great purity and refined elegance. The Chardonnay grapes were hand harvested on fruit and flower days from 39 year old vine...

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

We began day two with sixteen Margaret River chardonnays. All of them bar none, displayed good fruit concentration and very good length of flavour. The best wines displayed a seamless flavour journey across the palate, and the oak influence (whilst evident) was restrained and served to enhance the fruit, not smother it. From one extreme to the other, this bracket of wines showed an array of styles. My top picks were the 2012 Cullen ‘Kevin John’ (19.1), 2013 Thompson Est (18.6) and the 2011 Fraser Gallop ‘Parterre’ (18.7).
