The Tb points given to this wine are the world’s most valid and most up-to-date evaluation of the quality of the wine. Tastingbook points are formed by the Tastingbook algorithm which takes into account the wine ratings of the world's best-known professional wine critics, wine ratings by thousands of tastingbook’s professionals and users, the generally recognised vintage quality and reputation of the vineyard and winery. Wine needs at least five professional ratings to get the Tb score. Tastingbook.com is the world's largest wine information service which is an unbiased, non-commercial and free for everyone.

The Story

The white wines at Cullen reflect a desire for purity and balance. This we believe comes from the vineyard site itself and the biodynamic philosophy to help the land reflect its best potential in the bottle.

The grapes for both the Chardonnay and the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon are, like all our grapes, harvested by hand and at best flavour expression. For the Chardonnay the bunches are whole-bunch pressed for fruit delicacy and juice quality and then placed into barriques for fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The Sauvignon Blanc is part-fermented in barriques with indigenous yeast and for the most as a tank fermentation to retain fruit freshness. Semillon is fermented in tanks to keep the varietal freshness.

As usual, this blend contains a greater volume of Sauvignon Blanc than Semillon, which reflects the outstanding qualities of the fruit produced by the former variety on the Cullen Vineyard. We picked at optimal ripeness with harvest conditions quite similar to 2014 resulting in elegant wines and displaying beautiful fruit purity.
Complexity and completeness have been enhanced through maturing some of the wine in new oak.

Written Notes

Much debate over this one, as it had been shown from a magnum at the dinner the night before. I’d been blown away by it then and on the day, as good as this was, I still preferred that magnum. That said, I was in the minority. Many tasters preferred the freshness of the bottle (under screwcap) to the complexity of the magnum (under cork). Of course, surely that complexity is still to come for the bottle. Like most, the alcohol for this sits around the 14% mark, though from the 2006, this reduced a little. Vanya believes that this is due to the biodynamics. The wine itself – spices, dry herbs, nuts. Lovely length and an attractive texture but for me, not the absolute star quality of the magnum. Still wonderful. Certainly has amazing freshness. Worth noting that Vanya believes that a blend will always be a better wine than either of these as straight varietals, so she has no plans to change to a straight savvy. She sees the semillon component as crucial for longevity.
