The Story

The Romanée Saint Vivant plot is wonderfully placed, a road separates it from Romanée Conti. Fabulously lavish soil, sublime soil that mixes clay and limestone, shapes one of the largest reds in the world.

History: created in 1098, the Citeaux Abbey has long contributed to the extension of the vine in Burgundy. The monks of Saint-Vivant de Vergy accompanied this new culture as evidenced by their name given to this climate of the Côte de Nuits.

Vinifcation: vinification takes place in wooden vats. Aging is carried out in barrels for 15 months, with a percentage of new wood very measured: 30 to 50%, which participates in the construction of the wine and the birth of soberly spicy notes. Bottling takes place after 18 months of aging. Until 1990, the vineyard was exploited by a winemaker from the village of Aloxe-Corton. The first wine signed by Domaine de l'Arlot carries the 1991 vintage.

Wine Information

The weather: Spring is mild with an early start to the vine. August is magnificent: lots of sun, hot weather, very little rain ... Perfect weather for the vines! September is ideal, with sun, North wind ... until the end of the harvest.

Harvest: Started on September 7 by the young vines of the Estate, we stopped on the afternoon of 8 and on the 9 to make the most of the beautiful weather conditions. Resumed on 10 to end on September 16. Very, very little sorting, magnificent grapes and high yields which are between those of 1999 and those of 2005.

Food pairings: With such a wine, you should not hesitate and think big, very big: a filet of beef accompanied with a truffle sauce, a duck with blood or a chicken with porcini mushrooms. And in the fall, a royal hare will make a perfect union with this legendary red.
These suggestions are offered for information only, as a springboard to your taste imagination.

Vintage 2009

A warm spring with some hail in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. After an even flowering and a warm June, the summer arrived with variable July weather. Fortunately August was fine with a period of hot weather in the second week. September started with some rain, then became fine and warm again. A harvest of healthy, ripe grapes followed. The 2009s have all the structure packed in with rich, luscious fruit. Comparable to the 2005s. Great wines.

Written Notes

Medium-full colour. Ripe, accessible, stemmy, sweet nose. But there is backbone here. Fullish body. Very good grip but at the same time a little astringency. Quite intense but a bit clumsy.
