The Story

Conterno’s Monfortino is a heavyweight contender for the best Barolo around, and it definitely has our vote. It’s a matchless experience of power paired with subtlety and the effect is quite seductive. As it opens, you’ll experience classic hints of rose, earthy black truffles, cigar box, and anise in a boldly structured wine that’s still quite fresh.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous said it’s a “magnificent” wine that “explodes from the glass wi...

Written Notes

The 2019 vintage in Barolo is considered one of the region’s modern benchmarks—a year of balance, purity, and classical structure. A cool spring, warm but not extreme summer, and a beautifully extended ripening period allowed Nebbiolo to reach full phenolic maturity at moderate alcohol levels, with exceptional aromatic definition. The long, slow harvest produced wines of precision, lifted acidity, and refined yet powerful tannins. For Conterno, whose Monfortino is made only in great years and vinified with remarkable strictness, 2019 is a vintage that merges classical austerity with remarkable inner perfume.

The Monfortino 2019 is a wine of profound depth and classical gravitas—monumental yet remarkably pure, a Barolo that speaks softly at first, only to expand with breathtaking authority. The nose is tightly wound yet incredibly complex: wild cherry, redcurrant, and pomegranate rise alongside notes of rose petal, dried herbs, blood orange, and fine tobacco. Beneath the lifted aromatics lies a darker, more brooding stratum of licorice root, iron, crushed rock, and tar, unmistakably marking the wine as Monfortino.

On the palate, the wine is vertical, structured, and uncompromising, built on Conterno’s signature firm, noble tannins—massive in number yet exquisitely refined. The fruit sits in perfect tension between brightness and depth: flavors of maraschino cherry, red plum skin, raspberry, and black tea intertwine with hints of sage, balsamic, and warm earth. A powerful mineral core—almost saline—runs straight through the wine, giving it shape, nerve, and remarkable persistence. The finish is long, symphonic, and texturally gripping, unfolding slowly with mineral, floral, and savory echoes lasting for minutes.

This is a serious, deeply age-worthy Monfortino, less about early charm and more about promise—a wine built for decades of evolution, where today’s austerity will transform into haunting nuance. Cellar confidently for 20–40+ years, with its peak likely emerging after 2035.

The quality of the tannins is so impressive in this wine, even though it’s a tannic year. Medium to full body. Lovely complexity and length. Barrel sample. Bottled next year and released in 2025.
