The Story

Half of the grapes for Belcanto Chianti Classico come from our vineyards at Nittardi, located 450 meters above sea level, while the other half come from our vineyard in San Quirico, located south of Castellina at 270 meters. While at Nittardi we only have Sangiovese grapes, the San Quirico vineyard, planted in 1968, has Sangiovese and small amounts of seven other local grape varieties, including Canaiolo, Colorino and Malvasia Nera. Both vineyards enjoy a soil mix of limestone and clay with a rich skeleton of schist, which engenders the wine with a pleasant minerality. On the label of Belcanto, Michelangelo is portayed in a mosaic of Galestro stones, typical of the soil of our terroir.

Written Notes

Own vines, all organic, in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti. Half of the grapes for Belcanto come from their vineyards at Nittardi, located 450 m above sea level, while the other half come from their vineyard close to Villa Rosa, located south of Castellina at 270 m. The Villa Rosa vineyard, planted in 1968, has Sangiovese and small amounts of seven other local grape varieties: Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, Mammolo, Foglia Tonda and Pugnitello. This wine is 90% Sangiovese. Both vineyards have a soil mix of limestone and clay with a rich skeleton of galestro, the local name for schist. Nittardi describe 2018 as a 'classic' vintage after the hot, dry, small vintage in 2017. 12 months in French oak barrels (500 litre) and 35-hl botte, 4 months in concrete vats, a few months in the bottle. Bottled August 2019. TA 5.8 g/l, pH 3.35.

Mid crimson. Lively sour-cherry fruit, a touch of spice, even a hint of vanilla though it is not notably oaky, and has that slightly stony aroma that could be the vineyard or the concrete, or both. Super-fresh to balance the bright fruit flavours and fine-boned but sufficient tannins. Lively, seemingly light-bodied but with good persistence. Harmonious, nothing forced. (JH)
