A Work of Champagne

Champagne Palmer & Co asked the artist Alain Bonnefoit to produce his artistic interpretation of its prestige cuvee, Amazone de Palmer.

With the name inspired by those powerful and free female warriors of antiquity, troubling and mysterious women of legend, Amazone de Palmer carries some of their power and magic. The artist has expressed his vision of the cuvée on the box and offers a unique and rare view, far from the charms of the artificial.

Born in 1937 in Montmartre where he currently lives and works, Alain Bonnefoit is known worldwide as one of the champions of female nude painting.

Trained at the School of Beaux-Arts in Paris and Brussels, his meeting with sculptor Volti was decisive. He became Volti’s pupil and friend. In 1964, Alain Bonnefoit decided to devote himself exclusively to painting nudes. He then discovered Asia in 1975 where he learned the Sumi-e technique. Later, he tried out a combination of techniques, experimenting with materials such as paper and jute canvas that enabled him to create large-format works.

Alain Bonnefoit is also a sculptor of wood, marble and alabaster. He divides his time between France, Italy, Korea, Japan and the United States. He has had important exhibitions in all of these countries.

Historia

In the beginning there were the vines, the soil, the mineral and a group of dynamic winegrowers creating a pretty tightly net-team unified by the sacred figure 7. Seven owners of first and grands crus located in La côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims.

As soon as the beginning, these pioneers give this particular group its letters of nobility: they are determined to only get grapes from aristocratic, noble and high-quality crus.
Thanks to the accurate know-how and mastering of the blending process, they aim at enhancing, their own production. It is the birth of the “Société des grands crus de la Champagne “, a very VIP and very select club due to the drastic conditions for the admission of new members.
They settle in Avize in 1947, one of the most famous wine areas of The Côte des Blancs.
Led by a tireless and endless pursuit for perfection, they managed to create a unique style, expressing the fascinating diversity of aromas and flavours of their wines, which quickly led to their consecration.

An exceptional vision has always inspired the leaders of the Champagne Palmer. So, the founders settle on la rue Jacquart, in Reims, in 1959. They then buy the premises of a Wine trading house. The chance gives them several opportunities to acquire other nearby buildings along with an outstanding growth of the company at the same time. All the facilities and the great labyrinth of cellars gathered by Palmer in Reims give the company a new dimension.

The beginning of the 1970s just highlights an other turning point in the life of Palmer. In response to the growth of the House, the leaders will explore other great terroirs of exception of Champagne: the Sézannais, land of election of the chardonnay and the picturesque region of les Riceys in the Aube area, known for its pinot noir.

A perfectly controlled growth allows the Cie to cross, mid-1980s, the symbolic cap of one million bottles. This threshold will be a decisive step in the development of Palmer by implementing a dynamic policy of investments, to develop a very efficient work tool.

In the Early 1990s, once again come the question of moving. The lack of space being a chronic disease of the House. A wonderful opportunity in 1997 occurs: this will be the acquisition of a huge Cellar/Winery of a nearby champagne House. This will set Palmer, in Reims, on two major sites, close to each other.

The new face of Palmer, in the heart of “La Cité des Sâcres”, exemplifies the remarkable expansion experienced by the house over the last thirty years.

Champagne Palmer is deeply implanted in the champenoise mosaic on 415 hectares of a wide and exceptional vineyard area, scattered in about 40 different regional sites: so many colors and nuances which allow our cellar master to compose a rich and beautiful masterpiece.

With 200 hectares of vineyards classified in Grands and Premier Crus, it is from the Mountain of Reims that Palmer gets the main part of its supplies. The regions of La Côte de Sézanne, of La côte de Bar, and La Vallée de La Marne complete the assemblage by bringing their own specificities.

The grape-varieties are divided into: 50 % of Chardonnay, 40 % of pinot Noir, 10 % of pinot Meunier: The ideal proportions which shape the unique style of the cuvées elaborated by Palmer.

50% of our chardonnay grapes come from La Montagne de Reims, Premier Crus Trépail and Villers-Marmery. La Côte de Sézanne, whose slopes prolong naturally the geographical area known as La Falaise de l’ile de France, supplies the other half.

Our Pinot Noir, a black grape with white juice essentially come from the Mountain of Reims with our historic plots as the Grand Crus of Mailly-Champagne, Verzenay, Verzy, Puisieulx, Sillery, Bouzy and Ambonnay and the renowned Premier Crus of Ludes, Chigny-les-Roses, and Rilly-la-Montagne. La Côte de Bar, in particular the so lovely and charming village of Les Riceys and the attractive nearby cru of Balnot-sur-Laignes supply, as for them, pinots noirs whose "generosity" is particularly looked for in the assemblage.

The Pinot Meunier rules supreme over the West of La Montagne de Reims, in particular in the Premier Crus of Sacy and Villedommange as well as in La Vallée de La Marne, the other region of preference of this grape variety which will bring roundness to our cuvées.

Viinivalmistus

Palmer & Co is one of the rare champagne houses to have adapted the famous winemaking technique developed in Jerez to the wines of Champagne. In Champagne, the Solera (or perpetual reserve) system is refreshed every year with an addition of wines from the latest harvest.

For over 35 years, we have been working with three Soleras in two stages, the first in oak casks for the new vintage before being added to the perpetual reserve in stainless steel vats.

«It’s an everlasting blend, the old wine “educating” the new, the young wine feeding the old. The principle is simple but requires great rigour in winemaking.»  Xavier Berdin

The red wine Solera is used for creating our Rosé Reserve cuvée while the Chardonnay Solera is used as a spice in the reserve wines of Palmer Brut Reserve and also in the dosage liqueur at the time of disgorgement, and the Pinot Noir Solera is used in the blend of Palmer Blanc de Noirs.

“For Palmer & Co, the creation of a cuvée is just as much the work of nature as it is the work of Man. We blend the different varieties, crus and reserve wines until we reach the perfect balance.  Xavier Berdin

The Cellar Master and his 4 oenologists are guardians of the Palmer & Co style, passionately watching over the wines of yesterday, today and tomorrow with unrelenting vigilance.
