The Tb points given to this wine are the world’s most valid and most up-to-date evaluation of the quality of the wine. Tastingbook points are formed by the Tastingbook algorithm which takes into account the wine ratings of the world's best-known professional wine critics, wine ratings by thousands of tastingbook’s professionals and users, the generally recognised vintage quality and reputation of the vineyard and winery. Wine needs at least five professional ratings to get the Tb score. Tastingbook.com is the world's largest wine information service which is an unbiased, non-commercial and free for everyone.

The Story

At 2360 feet of elevation, Skyline Vineyard is one of the highest Pinot Noir vineyards in California. This extreme altitude helps cool the vineyard while providing the constant sunshine that is found above the fog. The rocky soils are extremely shallow and make the vines work hard throughout the season. In order to produce a viable crop, the vines are very tightly spaced with Pinot Noir at 2'x3' and Syrah at 4'x3'. We think that Skyline is the most closely spaced Pinot Noir vineyard in California. Its 12 clones are planted in selection massale (mixed together) at a density of almost 7000 vines per acre.

Skyline's extremely rocky and diverse soils produce one of the most mineral-driven and exotic wines in the New World. While the wines can be approached on release, we recommend a few years of cellaring to allow the fantastic and unusual Moroccan spice and pepper character to become fully expressive.

Vintage 2007

A vintage of contrasts

The 2007 vintage contrasted with previous vintages and with early predictions—yet grape growers brilliantly adapted to changing conditions. The year began dry with a warmer-than-normal winter that continued into spring, resulting in earlier budding, bloom and set. A mild-to-cool summer finished with a Labor Day heat spike that added the boost of sugar development that fruit needed to complement the excellent acid structure developed in the white varieties.

Harvest started in early to mid-August. Unseasonably cool weather and nearly an inch of rain in the second week of October did not affect the crops as Indian Summer returned with warm, clear days and vineyard crews sprang into action to finish harvest for a vintage of exceptional quality.

Written Notes

In contrast to the heightened expressiveness of the Home, here the nose is quite reserved yet notably more complex with beautifully layered aromas of red, blue and black pinot fruit plus lovely dried rose petal notes that are also reflected by the big, robust and palate drenching flavors where the impressive dry extract completely buffers the firm stem tannins on the gorgeously long finish. – Allen Meadows, Burghound.com 92p
