The Story

Vineyard age: 8 to 10 years

Vineyard area: 26 hectares

Soil type: Omaka stony silt loam

Background: Benjamin de Rothschild purchased a vineyard in the heart of the Marlborough region of New Zealand, in order to create Rimapere in 2012. The name of the property was a deliberate choice. It means “five arrows” in Maori and simultaneously honours the Rothschild family’s coat of arms and traditional New Zealand culture. Benjamin de Rothschild dreamed of creating his own sauvignon blanc wine. He had to find the perfect gem and corresponding jewellery box for a precise wine-growing endeavour, far from the industrial vineyards also present in Marlborough. Ideally located in the prestigious area of Rapaura, the Rimapere enjoys an incredible terroir. One-hundred years ago the river still ran across it. Today, its alluvial soil made up of large river pebbles lying flush with the clayey ground makes it fertile, naturally draining land. The vineyard is sustainably farmed, with an average age of around 15 years. This area’s cool climate is perfect for ripening high quality sauvignon blanc grapes (20 hectares single vineyard – first vintage 2012) and providing them with their typical lemon and grapefruit flavours, together with crisp acidity. Lastly 4 hectares are planted with pinot noir.

Written Notes

On the nose it is open, youthful, fresh and pure. The taste is fresh, focused, fruity, vivid, and dry, and high in acidity, medium-bodied, with balanced structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has blackcurrant, herbs, citrus and mineral flavours. The finish is long, lingering, pure and flavorful. This wine is a good every wine and fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 5min before tasting.
