Background: Benjamin de Rothschild purchased a vineyard in the heart of the Marlborough region of New Zealand, in order to create Rimapere in 2012. The name of the property was a deliberate choice. It means “five arrows” in Maori and simultaneously honours the Rothschild family’s coat of arms and traditional New Zealand culture. Benjamin de Rothschild dreamed of creating his own sauvignon blanc wine. He had to find the perfect gem and corresponding jewellery box for a precise wine-growing endeavour, far from the industrial vineyards also present in Marlborough. Ideally located in the prestigious area of Rapaura, the Rimapere enjoys an incredible terroir. One-hundred years ago the river still ran across it. Today, its alluvial soil made up of large river pebbles lying flush with the clayey ground makes it fertile, naturally draining land. The vineyard is sustainably farmed, with an average age of around 15 years. This area’s cool climate is perfect for ripening high quality sauvignon blanc grapes (20 hectares single vineyard – first vintage 2012) and providing them with their typical lemon and grapefruit flavours, together with crisp acidity. Lastly 4 hectares are planted with pinot noir.

Written Notes

Light green colour. Refined, appealing, fresh and classic herbaceous nose with blackcurrant leaves and nettles. Dry and light on palate with very elegant Marlborough sauvignon style. A moderate acidity and lean fruit. Not for flamboyant ripe Marlborough sauvignon lovers, but for those who opt for more classic French style. Drink now with fresh seafood. JL 89p (12/2020)
