The Story
The estate’s flagship wine since its inaugural 2000 vintage, SLOAN Proprietary Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Layered with remarkable complexity and intensity of flavors and aromas, SLOAN exhibits a gorgeous tension between elements of grace and power, balance and opulence, as well as age and vibrancy. It is a precise wine with defined structure and immense aging potential and at the same time, a seductive wine of exceptional fruit finesse, minerality, and multilayered mouthfeel. Crafted with meticulous care from vine to bottle and exacting standards for achieving the highest quality, this uninhibitedly rich and extraordinarily pure wine is a beautiful, raw expression of our terroir – a reflection of our soils, climate, and its place of origin. The 2002 and 2007 vintages of SLOAN achieved the highest critical acclaim of “a perfect wine”.
The wine sees 26 months in French Oak, (Darnajou and Taransaud) 100% new. Martha and the team process half of the fruit by barrel fermentation and half in stainless steel to help better manage the smaller lots. All wines see an extended maceration period after a cold soak.
Wine Information
“The 2011 Sloan Estate has turned out beautifully. Readers will find more of an Old World flavor profile and sense of structure in the 2011, yet all the elements are very nicely balanced. Savory herbs, crushed flowers, lavender, mint and mocha all add lift to the perfumed dark red cherry fruit in this gracious, super-expressive Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine. The great sites always come through, even in the most difficult of vintages. I remember visiting Sloan Estate during the 2011 harvest and seeing first hand the attention to detail here. It’s no surprise the 2011 has turned out quite nicely.” -Antonio Galloni (93 Points)
“The soft, slightly herbaceous but charming 2011 Sloan does not possess the concentration, depth or richness of its two older siblings, but it is a pretty wine revealing good freshness as well as lots of underbrush, red and black currant, licorice and toasty oak characteristics. Enjoy it over the next 10-15 years.” -Wine Advocate (89-92 Points)
“Bright ruby-red. Sexy aromas and flavors of black raspberry, brown spices and bitter chocolate torrefaction; slightly truffley but not green. Elegant and sharply focused, with lovely spicy intensity and fresh acidity giving the wine lovely inner-mouth perfume. Not a particularly full or deep wine but subtle and refined. The smooth, powdery tannins here are rare for the vintage. The team made a particularly strict selection for the flagship wine in 2011 and “took a long time to finalize the blend,” noted winemaker Martha McClellan." -Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar (92 Points)
