History

The history of Clos des Papes harks back to the 17th century. Even then, the Avril family was famous in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Several members of this family were municipal consuls and treasurers between 1756 and 1790. This period is immortalized on a stone plaque on the city wall near the palace. Vineyards

Today the property covers 32 ha. 3 ha. is with white varieties. 24 different parcels are spread around the town. One parcel is nearby the pope's castle and has been surrounded by walls (clos). From here came the name of the domain. 
Since 2011 the vineyards are certified "agriculture biologique"

Winemaking

Clos des Papes started making white wine in 1955, when two hectares were planted with Clairette, Picpoul, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. Today, the average grapevines are 15 to 30 years old, and the five varieties are planted in equal amounts.
