Taita is Montes’ latest, supreme achievement. Our fi rst ‘super wine’– vinifi ed with passion, hallmark oenological rigour, and above all, wisdom. Put simply, it represents the sum of all the knowledge we have gained over 25 years of making fi ne wines. Many years’ of patient observation and research led us to a specifi c site in one of our best vineyards, from which comes this great wine of generous intensity, wonderful complexity and sublime elegance. Despite years of winemaking at the highest level, our drive to improve and perfect remains undiminished, says our hero winemaker Aurelio Montes. Which is why we feel we can allow ourselves a little pride in launching this prestigious new addition to our range. Our approach has always involved a degree of dreaming – about what’s possible beyond the immediate, when all obstacles are overcome and we discover the true greatness of a unique and exceptional terroir.  Taita is in that sense a dream come true – the best from our vineyards together with the fruit of Montes wisdom.

History

The concept of  Taita began to take shape when, observing and investigating the characteristics of the soils in our Marchigüe Estate, in Colchagua Valley, Aurelio Montes discovered that in one small part of our estate, the geological strata was quite different to any other in the entire property. At the time, our dear late and inspired visionary, Douglas Murray, gave the wine the name  Taita. In Chile, taita means a father, a tutor, a mentor: someone who, with a lifetime’s experience, affectionally and with dedication teaches us how to live. He is the wise man: a guide for everyone.  Taita has a refi ned harmony that far surpasses any wine we have previously created – a wine born of wisdom, affection and passion.

The Terroir

Taita´s grapes are selected from a unique sector of our Marchigüe Vineyard in the Colchagua Valley chosen after many years of rigorous geological search led by Aurelio Montes together with Pedro Parra, terroir expert and Viña Montes viticultural team. In this special site, millions of years ago, a glacier came to a halt carrying great quantities of alluvial material. A vast quantity of rounded stones create an underground labyrinth to which the roots of Cabernet Sauvignon vines have adapted to dry farming irrigation management. Soil components are quite unique; decomposing granite and clay that give high acidity and a particular structure to the wine.

The Wine

Montes Taita is a concentrated and complex wine, the production of which is extremely limited. It is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with the addition by Aurelio of other varieties according to the qualities of the year’s vintage. Intense ruby-red in color, it is endowed with generous blueberry, blackberry, mocca and truffle aromas. In the mouth, the wine brings out delicious notes of cedar and bitter chocolate: most elegant yet powerful at the same time, with lovely soft, rounded tannins. Harmonious in structure, with an attractive, long and complex fi nish,  Taita has the potential for long aging, and can be laid down and cellared for many years.

History

The history of Montes seems like a dream, and that’s truly how it began, gradually becoming reality. It was in 1987 that our two original founders, Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, both highly experienced wine professionals, wanted to realize their dream of producing Chilean wines a quantum-leap higher in quality than the standards of the time. In 1988, they joined up with the other two founders, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, who brought their own complementary skills and expertise to the venture. And thus Montes was born, at first under the name Discover Wine. It was a dream come true for four great visionaries who succeeded in taking Montes wines from nowhere to more than 100 countries worldwide; by making ‘first growth’ wines respected and admired by the world’s critics and trade, and by drawing attention to what Chile was capable of producing. After we created the first Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon - through hard work and passion - it didn’t take long to achieve recognition. It was a mould-breaking wine that immediately raised the bar for other Chilean producers.

Montes was founded on the skills, knowledge and total commitment of its four founders. They had a very clear vision of what they wanted the company to be: the pioneer producer of premium quality Chilean wines that would meet the demands of a challenging world market. Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand overcame the many setbacks they were to meet with enormous wisdom and strength, placing the name of Montes and Chile on the world map of quality wines. Later, they would be joined in this considerable human effort by the Garcés and Barros families, who with their solid entrepreneurial competence, long term vision, and unshakeable commitment, have combined to earn Montes the reputation the company enjoys today - one of the best known, respected and beloved producers in the world of excellent wines.

Vineyards

Considered one of the most able practitioners in the cellar, winemaker Aurelio Montes has always maintained that '80% of good wine comes from the vineyards and only 20% from the cellar'. So vineyard care is paramount, enabling us to produce world-class wines. From the vineyard rows to the cellar, we meticulously study every variable in the winemaking process. Our commitment to method and process is almost obsessive; nothing is left to chance.

The best grapes
We began by building on the techniques developed for creating our first Montes Alpha wines many years ago. Key steps have been the removal of excess grape bunches during the first period of growth, and less irrigation, both of which have consistently helped us obtain the small yields and concentrated grape juice that are the prerequisites of quality wine. But perhaps the single most important characteristic of our winegrowing is the precision we exercise in harvesting of grapes at the precise moment of maturation. We aim for completely mature fruit so that we also have completely mature tannins. We pick the grapes at the coolest hours of the early morning (and sometimes at night, too) in order to preserve grape freshness. Once in our cellar, we eliminate any bunches that fall short of our quality standard. Not a day goes by without experimenting, and observing how wines behave - developing our own ways to create wines with the Montes stamp, never following others’ trends. We don’t follow conventional recipes: we just need the best grapes, and apply care and thought to them. We never overprocess or manipulate our wines: we let them rest and mature. It’s the Montes touch, followed and guarded by our angels.

Winemaking

Our cellar incorporates the latest and simplest wine processing technology. Believing that wine manipulation should be kept to an absolute minimum, we decided that pumps would have no place in the winery; instead, gravity moves grapes, juice and the wine around the building.

Avoiding pumps and opting for gravity allows us to give wine first-class treatment. From the moment harvested grapes are crushed on the receiving area of the roof, their juice is moved by gravity, falling through grooves in the roof to the fermentation tanks below. Not forced around by pumps, the delicacy of the must is kept intact, preserving gentle flavors, and the softest tannins. A unique elevator comprising a large stainless steel tank can give us the depth of fall needed to transfer wine around the cellar, without one single pump.
