Pereira d'Oliveira is a Madeira Wine producer, independent, run by the descendents of the founding owners, owned by 3 brothers under the administration of Aníbal D`Oliveira and Luís D´Oliveira, who represent the fifth generation of knowledge and experience dedicated to the production, commercialisation and exportation of Madeira Wine.

In this company 5 producers/exporters of Madeiras are integrated, all being from families from the island, with the oldest being founded in 1820. In our warehouses you will find a considerable stock of old rare wines which are the result of valuable wine inheritance of the aforementioned companies, and which currently represent added value for Pereira D'Oliveira (Vinhos) Lda. All our products are commercialised with the name «D´Oliveiras» and the respective logo which has been duly registered.

Every year at harvest time, grapes are acquired from the various traditional and recommended castes from the wine growers located in different parts of the island, with the maturation, quality and alcohol level being controlled.

The headquarters and the department of tasting and sales, are in an emblematic, listed building built in 1619, situated in the centre of Funchal, specifically to the north of the Praça do Municipio at Rua dos Ferreiros 107.

Inside information

No other company on the island can boast such a wealth of great old Madeiras. These include five monumental Verdelhos from the familys own São Martinho vineyards, vintaged in 1850, 1890, 1900, 1905 and 1912. There are no finer examples of mature Verdelho in existence today.

Digging into the DOliveiras library, we can also find profound Malvasias (a.k.a. Malmseys) from 1875, 1895, 1900 and 1907; Buals from 1903, 1908 and 1922; and Sercials from 1862, 1875, 1910 and 1937. The family also boasts superb examples of two very rare grape varieties: Terrantez (1880) and Moscatel (1875 and 1900.)

Immensely Powerful Wines

 There is a definite “house style” to these wines. They have very powerful aromatics, great lushness and viscosity, incredible structure, and a tangy character that is essential to great Madeira.

Its no wonder that others in the Madeira trade consider these to be supreme examples of classic Madeira. In fact, during the 1970s and 1980s, when the Madeira Wine Co. (Blandys, Cossart, etc.) was beginning to run low on old vintages to sell, it was to DOliveira that they turned.

Like Barbeito, DOliveira believes that Madeiras age best in cask. Consequently, its old vintages are kept in wood, and only enough is bottled to meet short-term needs.

Adegas do Torreão

In the early 2000s, DOliveira had the good fortune to absorb a smaller house, Adegas do Torreão, whose legendary owner, Vasco Loja, had recently passed away. Like DOliveira, Loja supplied Madeiras to the major shippers. At the time of his death, his firm owned little bottled Madeira, but he did have some incredible wine still in barrel.

By buying Lojas stocks, DOliveira made several important additions to its portfolio, including a classic 1969 Sercial and one of the few examples of vintage Bastardo still in existence, from 1927.

More Recent Vintages

While DOliveira has many great old Madeiras, it also possesses one of the most impressive stocks of relatively young Vintage Madeiras, made since the 1960s. These stocks reassure us that, 50 years from now, just as today, DOliveira will be the reference point for Vintage Madeira.

1808 Braheem A. Kassab Madeira SS Madeira / Very intense, with burnt brown sugar and mature orange, and fine glace fruit and crystallised ginger notes. On the palate it has richness and lusciousness, with masses of citrus fruit, lemon and lime, and a chocolaty foundation with caramel and still very fine, racy acidity that leaves this with lots of complexity, freshness and charm. There is a lightness and crispness, with plenty of vivid complexity - very good for the age. 97p

The Blandy's 2004 Malmsey is a clear amber color. It has a slightly backward bouquet for its type and needs more coaxing from the glass than expected. Dried honey, undergrowth, clove and smoky scents gradually emerge, although they never quite click into fifth gear. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Elegant and poised, this delivers pure marmalade, quince and clove notes mixed with white pepper and a dab of marjoram. Long and tender on the finish, it is a very poised and intellectual Malmsey that does not exude heaviness. Excellent.

The Oliveira's 1928 Sercial has a very refined, pure and alluring bouquet of orange zest, brown sugar, a touch of nougat and smoked walnut. The palate is medium-bodied with a wonderful, spicy character with white pepper, shaved ginger and lemongrass on the entry. It fans out wonderfully towards the finish that has great focus and harmony with a long, tangy finish with touches of ash on the aftertaste. 94 points,

1808 Braheem Kassab (BAK) “SS”Sercial / The nose is fresh but not rich with some smoke. The saline start bears sharp acidity. The wine is powerful with both mineral and citric flavors. It is a little short in the finish but a beauty to drink. ****(*)

The rarity of Bastardo is evidenced by Mannie Berk’s determination that the only pre-World War II vintages are 1830, 1836, 1858, 1870, 1875, 1876, and 1927.  As far as post-War vintages, it became extinct until Ricardo Freitas convinced a farmer to plant a small vineyard in 2004.  Today there is just over 1 hectare of Bastardo planted on the island.  Bastardo has always been scarce and bottlings of it even more so.

“Yquem 2001 / 97 points. Intense young gold with silver tinges. Very expressive with a beautiful array of aromas: Apricot, peach, tangerine, banana and pineapple, roasted fruit and sweet spices.
Round and rich but not heavy with a superb harmony and a long candy finish. Wonderful wine

Terrantez 1715  99 points / Terrantez grapes were first recorded in Madeira in the early 18th-century. Another grape that nearly died out during the phylloxera epidemic, Terrantez grapes have fairly high sugar content. This sale offers the opportunity to purchase wines from a grape that is currently nearly extinct: the current Terrantez harvest does not produce enough juice to fill a single barrel. As the Portuguese saying goes, "As uvas de Terrantez, não as comas nem as dês, para vinho Deus as fez." The grapes of Terrantez are not for eating or giving away; God created them for wine.
