History

Bodegas Sierra Cantabria was founded by Guillermo Eguren, a self-made bodeguero, who was, in the family tradition, a viticulturist. His family, native to San Vicente de La Sonsierra, one of the most sought after terroirs in Rioja, had grown grapes in Rioja Alavesa since the 1870’s. For decades the family sold their grapes to local producers, but Guillermo recognized the potential that his family's vineyards had to create great wine, and founded Bodegas Sierra Cantabria in 1957. Today, the fourth generation of the Eguren family directs all aspects of the winemaking process, with Marcos Eguren as the winemaker and director of operations and his brother Miguel Angel Eguren as the general manager. The family still prides themselves as viticulturists first, and as a result, all of the grapes are estate grown, and they do not source fruit from any third party source. As viticulturists in Rioja Alavesa, they grow a vast majority of Tempranillo, with only a small percentage of Garnacha and Graciano, as they recognize that Garnacha and Graciano do not ripen reliably in northern Rioja, and they do not want to source their Garnacha and Graciano from Rioja Baja.

Bodegas Sierra Cantabria is the family's original winery, and comprises a collection of their most classic style Rioja wines. Due to their viticultural background, the family’s wines are composed of mostly Tempranillo, as they recognize that Garnacha and Graciano do not ripen reliably in Northern Rioja.

Although the family's business has evolved over the years through the foundation of other projects, Bodegas Sierra Cantabria comprises their most traditional, classic styled wines. The wines are made from a blend of selected vineyards, as opposed to Viñedos Sierra Cantabria, which is the family's collection of single vineyard wines.

Winemaking

The quality of the great wines is not a result of sheer luck. It requires personal effort, knowledge and passion as well of the earth and the complicity of the weather. Nothing is predominant, everything is important in order to create internationally famous wines. This is the result of hard work of a family with a philosophy that have been passed from generation to generation: to give back to the earth everything that it has given to us through the meticulous elaboration of our wines.

In Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria we cultivate lasting relationships, those that are based on respect and generosity. We firmly believe in the meaning of giving your word, in the value of a handshake. We do not fear the "for life" but we seek it patiently, in every bond that we establish. We believe in the commitment to excellence, which is measured in every detail. In the wisdom of our ancestors, they showed us the importance of the connection with the earth. The memory that is built from affection is indelible. And it is that things, if they are well done, are forever.

XF is a Rosé based on a wide choice of grape varieties: 35% Garnacha, 30% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Viura, 5% Maturana and 5% Tempranillo. The production of this special blend of white and red grapes is complex. The white grapes will macerate for two days before pressing. One week later, the must of the red grapes will be added. This must had skin contact for 72 hours. The fermentation will be initiated by autochthonous yeasts under temperature control.

After two years without a fair, Prowein opened its doors on Mai 15, 2022. It was wonderful to see people "live and in colour", having good discussions and feel rather well. The fair has made everything, that visitors could feel at ease. Large corridors and therefore no "traffic jams" in the alleys were creating a very pleasant atmosphere. Although I am not a big fan of tasting on fairs, as the situation is often not ideal, this edition of Prowein with the more relaxed atmosphere invited to discover some novelties.

Marcos Eguren belongs to one of Spain's leading wine families and is responsible as oenologist for the family estate. He was called the "Rioja revolutionary Leader of Wine" by the wine magazine "Wine Enthusiast" to mention just one important title of his long list of accolades. He is master of interpreting the terroir of great vineyards. A true son of his father who has the nickname "vineyard collector". The vineyards of the family estate have a real treasure to offer with vines over 110 years old and still ungrafted. The family owns a number of estates with the origin in the heart of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta, the Bodega Sierra Cantabria and the Viñedos Sierra Cantabria. In addition there is the Bodega Señorio San Vicente, where the almost extinguished grape variety Tempranillo Peludo is cherished. In Rioja Alavesa there is Bodegas Viñedos de Paganos with the iconic single vineyard wines Nieta and Puntido. In the region of Toro, the Eguren family owns the estate of Teso La Monja with its flagship wine Teso La Monja, another wine icon. Dominio de Eguren, is another winery, placed in the area of Manchuela, producing charming wines under the appellation of Vino de la Tierra de Castilla.

Rosé is the wine type in fashion at the moment. The times when it was considered as "neither fish nor meat" are over. Therefore it makes sense to have a look at different rosé-styles around the world. The result shows some very pleasant surprises. Most of the wines have just been bottled, so the bottle shock may play a role. Therefore a significant number of wines received the plus, showing that there is more potential for a bright future.

Juha Lihtonen / The Best Scandinavian Sommelier 2003, Pro (Finland)  tasted  1 wines  from  Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria . In a tasting of  185 wines

BWW2021 competition finals were filled with superb lineup of the world's greatest wines and superb finds from various price categories. The finals that were run in various blind tasting sessions, revealed many surprises. Most commonly, the fact that all the wines were so enjoyable already at this young stage, although many of them will deliver so much more after ageing of 10-15 years. Congratulations for all the winners!
