The Donnhoff 2018 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese is deep and flinty as well as complex on the stony nose with its ripe and even stewed peach aromas. Silky, lush and refined on the palate, this is a concentrated yet pure, crystalline and delicate Riesling Spätlese with a long and complex, very mineral and filigreed, lingering salty finish. Highly stimulating and fresh. A gorgeous Spätlese from the famous Hermannshöhle. 95 points”

The tasting “VDP Grosses Gewächs” presented this year the vintage 2018. On this year’s tasting I was mainly concentrating on the northern wine areas for Riesling: Mosel, Saar, Ruwer, the Rheingau, Nahe and Mittelrhein. The vintage is rather successful although water stress and heat have been the main topics and made the live for the vintners not easier. However the results are very convincing.”

2012 Balthasar Ress Nussbrunnen Riesling GG: Pale lemon yellow. Apples, minerals and quite easy nose, light on it's feet. Elegant. Fresh acidity, nuanced and again light on it's feet but more intense than it sugests. Lovely balance, nuanced and really elegant, lovely, some would say light, long. 93+”

German Riesling vintage 2014 Part I / Marienburg "Rothenpfad" 2014 Riesling Clemens Busch / Very expressive nose with cherry blossom, orange blossom, strawberry and ripe orange. Full and quite dense on the palate with less charm than nose, but a serious built texture and good length. 94”

As every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of August, the VDP showed a huge array of over 500 wines from the german Grand Cru vineyards, designated as Grosses Gewächs, in a preview tasting for professionals and the press. The tasting was hold on August 29 and 30, 2016.
As the sheer quantity of wines available was too much for a short tasting session, I focussed on the grape variety Riesling and on the rather classic areas such as Mosel, Saar, Ruwer, Pfalz, Rheingau, Nahe and Mittelrhein. From these wine regions I have tasted all Rieslings available. In addition I also tasted a small selection of Riesling from Rheinhessen. The tasting showed a very high and rather homogenous quality level due to good conditions in 2015 but also applied experience and knowledge of the vintners. A very successful tasting with highly recommendable wines.”
