Wine Information

Millésime 1996 (Vintage 1996) is the greatest vintage of the last century. It offers a palate which blends strength, refined flavours and fruity aromas

Colour: Transparent, brilliant, with sparkling golden highlights

Sparkle: Fine, long-lasting mousse with a creamy finish

Bouquet: An initial burst of fruity, biscuity flavours with notes of almond and nuts, followed by a second nose of red plums and mirabelles

Palate: A delightfully fresh initial impression, pure notes of autumn fruits with a hint of mirabelles

Overall impression: A perfect balance of alcohol, sweetness and acid. Bouquet and palate are in perfect harmony. An excellent vintage that will take its place in the history of the centuries.

Alcohol: 12.5% vol.

Vintage 1996

Up to this point 1996 has been considered a fantastic vintage which produced classic wines; the best since 1990. A long, dry summer produced grapes of record ripeness with record acidity. Some, including myself, question how the 1996s are aging. The wines are generally characterized by a distinctive rather lemony acidity and very good attack, but some wines now seem terribly austere, while others already seem dangerously short of fruit. None of the subsequent vintages are quite as distinctive as 1996, which in the more successful cases should almost certainly be drunk after the 1999s.

Written Notes

One of the absolute foremost vintages ever from Gratien. Simply a wonderfully, beautifully braided composition. A real work of art with oily, accessible, modern fruit with buttery elements. Fresh acidity under a layer of vanilla-propelled aromas. Elegant and as sophisticated as an Italian sports car. However, I was somewhat less impressed at my latest tasting.

Medium-deep, lemon-green colour. Very fresh and lively youthful, green very fresh and elegant. Lively. Purity of fruit, nice creaminess. Pehmeä paahde koko ajan taustalla, silkuy, glossy, beautiful.
