AUSTRALIA VINTAGE REPORT: The 2017 winegrape crush is estimated to be 1.93 million tonnes, based on responses received by the Wine Sector Survey 2017. This crush is 5 per cent higher than the 2016 final crush figure of 1.84 million tonnes (Department of Agriculture and Water Resources – Levies recorded figure). ‘The Heir’ Syrah McLaren Vale 2017 ($80) – This vintage may not match its legendary predecessor, but this wine certainly exceeds vintage expectations. Near black with purple rims, the nose is all about licorice, chocolate, axle grease (in a good way), blackberries, tar, soy and beefstock. There is impressive oak integration, decent length, good focus, freshness and fine tannins. Quite bright, this will drink well over the next decade. The vintage might not have the intensity of ’16, but the wine is delicious. 94.
