Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2011 – 96 points – Cellar Selection – Wine Enthusiast

“Beautifully balanced, this opens with alluring scents of wild berry, rose, baking spice and whiffs of chopped herb. Seamlessly combining ripe fruit and the firm's trademark finesse, the bright elegantly structured palate delivers juicy wild cherry, crushed raspberry, white pepper and a hint of black tea framed in polished tannins and fresh acidity. It's already tempting but the best is yet to come.”

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG – 2011 – 94+ points – Vinous

“Dark red. Musky nuances give way to brighter red fruit, licorice and herbal aromas. Rich and dense, with flavors of red cherry and minerals lifted by hints of orange peel and bergamot, not to mention noteworthy but harmonious acidity. Finishes long with youthfully chewy tannins and lingering hints of violet…”

The Story

Biondi-Santi also thinks that his Riserva is one of the world’s longest-lasting wines:
“Even though Italian wine legislation requires that Brunello be matured in barrels for two years and in bottles for four to six months, we allow our wine to age for five to six years before bottling. We traditionally use Slovenian barrels, which further enhance the longevity of the wine. Then we cellar the Brunello in bottles for at least another two years before bringing them to market. Indeed, I doubt very much that, even after all this, the Riserva would be at all drinkable for at least another ten years, because it thrives on its magnificent reputation for longevity. A majority of our wines are sold in Italy, as they become extremely expensive once exported. In the price competition with top French wines, they invariably come in second place."

Biondi-Santi’s annual production volume is approximately 80,000 bottles, which are produced exclusively from the estate’s vineyards: 60,000 bottles of Brunello Annata and, in exceptionally good years, approximately 6,000 bottles of Riserva. The Brunello Annata is a direct descendant of the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva and is also produced during years which enjoy good, but not extraordinary, weather conditions. The Rosso di Montalcino is made using the same grapes as the Bruneelo, but is sold without going through the same ageing process as its big brothers. Despite this, the Rosso is a very highly esteemed wine in Italy, obtaining the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) classification in 1984.

Written Notes

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva makes a bold and more articulate statement (compared to the 2012 Annata wine released at the same time). That extra year of aging has contributed to more powerful aromas of dark fruit, balsam herb and spice. There is extra fiber and texture here overall. This Riserva shows a higher degree of density and a tighter embroidery with dark fruit, spice and tobacco. Both 2011 and 2012 are warm vintages, and the wines produced do not boast the same level of bright acidity that you normally get from this estate. But, if there's one thing the wines of Biondi-Santi have demonstrated over the years, it is that they get better with time. Set this bottle aside in your cellar.

Last year was a big one on the Biondi-Santi timeline. In April 2016, rumors that this historic Tuscany estate was being sold overtook the Vinitaly trade fair like wild fire. At the time, Italian newspapers reported that the winery and vineyards at Il Greppo were the focus of an intense bidding war between the Prada fashion group and the Bernard Arnault investment group. No concrete details ever followed and the chatter slowly subsided in the months to follow. However, lingering doubts remained. It became clear that an ownership shakeup was imminent. Biondi-Santi has been in family hands since its founding at the end of the 19th Century. Reports of bank debt and disarray had dogged the estate since the death of Franco Biondi Santi in 2013 at the age of 91. In December 2016, Franco's son Jacopo Biondi Santi announced that a partnership deal had been signed. Jacopo and his family sold a majority stake to France's Européenne de Participations Industrielles (EPI). The Paris-based holding company is owned by Christopher Descours. It owns the Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck Champagne brands. Jacopo remains president of Tenuta Greppo and his son Tancredi will continue in his active role. Both father and son remain in control of winemaking. I am disappointed to see that Biondi-Santi continues to operate without an importer in the USA and wish them luck in finding the right fit now that the events of 2016 are behind them.

2011 Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva – 94 points / Concentrated and deep aromas with intense and tight fruit with cherries, plums, wet leather, dark chocolate and tobacco smoke. Medium + bodied and rich wine with juicy and appealing red berry feeling, leather, dark chocolate and nuts. Good structure. The wine is still lacking in start and finish. However, the tannins are nice and help balance the wine in a good way. 94 points. For now. (96P)

Biondi Santi Riserva 2011 / Brilliant ruby red in color with a signature citrus bark notes on the nose. Generous fruit, black pepper and hints of spice are interwoven, seamlessly integrated with the wine’s tannic frame. A wine with incredible balance and structure. Firm tannins will slowly open leading to a wine of depth, complexity and harmony. Very long, lingering finish. 94p

Colour is medium. On the nose it is wide, youthful, complex, rich and fresh. The taste is silky, ripe, fresh, powerful, with medium tannin, and average in acidity, with complex and balanced structure. On the palate it is layered and has balsamic, bread, cedar, cherry, cigar-box, earthy, herbs, leather, meaty, mineral, mushrooms and violet flavours. This wine is excellent.
