The Story

The production of this wine involves the careful selection of the best barrels available and the best grapes from the La Coqueta vine, situated on the South-facing side very close to the winery.  The barrels have been selected for their finesse and quality with the clear aim of making the very best wine.  In addition to the usual careful checking process during fermentation and ageing in our winery, for this wine we take even more care.  All proceeds from sales of María Remírez de Ganuza Reserva Especial are given over to charitable causes: proceeds in respect of 2003 and 2004 vintages were donated to the cancer charity AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer) to fund research projects.  Proceeds for 2005 and 2006 are to be used to fund projects undertaken by the Downs Syndrome charity, Fundación Síndrome de Down.

Vintage 2011

Rioja: Hot, dry weather throughout the summer set the stage for ripe, deeply flavored wines that tend to be low-acid and fruit-forward, with round tannins that will ensure positive aging over at least the coming decade.

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is ruby red, and looking clear and deep. On the nose it is intense and complex. The taste is elegant, full, round, fragrant, and dry, warming, with high tannin, with silky tannins, and high in acidity, medium-bodied, with multi-dimensional structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has earthy, smoky, chocolate, mineral, balsamic, toasty and blueberry flavours. The finish is endless and flavorful. This wine is masterpiece. I paid around 100-200€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years, decant at least 1h before tasting and this is a good invest wine. Good value for money. I do recommend.
