The Story

Concerto di Fonterutoli, which first saw the light of day in 1981, is one of the first ten wines that spawned the legend of the Supertuscans in a decade which marked a historic turnabout in Tuscan winemaking.

Concerto's first vintage 1981 was an outright experiment resulting in only fifteen barriques – the very first barriques ever to be used at Fonterutoli – jealously guarded in our historic cellars for eighteen months.

Soil: Rocky - coming from decomposed limestone and sandstone

Grapes: Sangiovese from Scassi vineyard, 350 m & Cabernet Sauvignon from Brotine vineyard, 340 m

Ageing: 18 months in small French oak barrels: Tonneaux (Sangiovese), Barriques (Cabernet Sauvignon) & after blending 3 months in concrete tanks.

Written Notes

A deep, dark ruby red hue signals the richness within. The bouquet unfolds in layers—ripe blueberries meet gentle notes of toasted oak, dark chocolate, and a whisper of mint, creating a captivating interplay of fruit, spice, and herbaceous charm. On the palate, it's full-bodied yet graceful, with a vibrant, satiny texture and beautifully integrated structure. A mineral undercurrent supports a long, supple finish, highlighting its superb finesse and concentration. Energetic and refined, this wine shows great aging potential, expected to reach its peak between 2030 and 2040. Serve at 17–18°C with grilled venison and a classic grand veneur sauce, or at 16–17°C alongside roasted meats and savory accompaniments. – JL 97p (July 2025)

Ruby colour with slightly brick red hue. Balmy nose with refined spiciness, vanilla, gingerbread, floral hints in the direction of wisteria and violets. Liquorice and hints of coffee in the background. On the palate very elegant yet persistent with refined acidity, finely grained tannins, excellent depth and length. A great wine with vibrant character, energetic with exciting tension.
