The Story

Chateau Belair is now owned by the Moueix family, and has had a new name since the 2008 vintage. This is one of the best vineyards in Saint Emilion, perched at the top of the slope right next to Ausone, near Canon and above Angelus. Despite the brilliant terroir, the wine-making here had been mediocre for many years until the Moueix purchase. It is clear that Edouard Moueix is going to transform this Chateau into one of the stars of Saint Emil...

Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat led to early flowering. Additionally, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and we can expect a more opulent vintage than in recent years.

Written Notes

Belair Monange (98+ points) had intense black truffles and black cherries on the nose and was sophisticated to the core.

  • 98p

2020  Château Belair-Monange St. Émilion Grand Cru Full-bodied, concentrated, rich and velvety, the wine promptly provides layer after layer of flawlessly ripe, black and dark red pit fruits, crushed rocks, licorice, espresso, smoke and flowers. Long, deep, rich, concentrated and focused, the wine finishes with a majestic combination of minerals, black plums, black cherries, dark cocoa, velvet-laced tannins and spice. The stony finish sticks with you for close to 60 seconds. Give this at least a decade before pulling a cork and enjoy it over the next 3 decades with little effort. 98-100  Pts

  • 100p

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Delicate yet densely woven nose with aromatic complexity, ripe plums, Boysenberries and hints of blackberry spurs, vanilla and cardamom, elegant toasting aroma in the background, subtle oak. On the palate tightly structured with convincing depth and excellent length, freshness, racy tannins and juicy sweet fruit. A great wine with excellent potential and noble character.
