The Story

The property is located 10km north of Pauillac in the Haut-Medoc and has since grown to 85 hectares. With overall plantings of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and an average vine age of over 30 years, Sociando-Mallet has gained a reputation as one of the finest Haut-Medoc wines outside of the 1855 Bordeaux classification. 100% hand-harvested, the grapes are fermented using natural yeasts and, post-fermentation, are age...

Vintage 1996

1996 presents itself as a “classic” Bordeaux year, although – as Jancis Robinson MW wrote – not in the “lean” sense; Although Farr Vintners director Tom Hudson told the drinks industry it may have been a "very good" rather than "really great" year as it was not uniformly excellent across the region .

Written Notes

OWC, purchased soon after release. Level: Into neck. Cork: Perfect condition.

Healthy, bright and dark colour, no brown edges. Clean, very typical Cabernet Sauvignon dominated nose, dark berries, pepper, lovely berry fruit flavours. Precise, clean fruit, medium body. Tannins as in vintage 1996 clearly noticeable, so that you wish the wine had a little more flesh. A real classic Médoc wine. Will keep for more than another decade.

Food: Côte de Boeuf, rump steak

Avoid: Anything too spicy

Not recommended for candle light dinners, otherwise you will have to explain why this wine with its typical edges is a great Bordeaux :-)

Music: Echo and the Bunnymen: Angel and Devils...
