The Story

The property is located 10km north of Pauillac in the Haut-Medoc and has since grown to 85 hectares. With overall plantings of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and an average vine age of over 30 years, Sociando-Mallet has gained a reputation as one of the finest Haut-Medoc wines outside of the 1855 Bordeaux classification. 100% hand-harvested, the grapes are fermented using natural yeasts and, post-fermentation, are age...

Vintage 2003

2003 was the hottest vintage ever seen in Bordeaux. The most successful châteaux have passed their exceptional 2000s and some claim to have made their greatest wines in living memory.

Written Notes

Served blind by a friend. He had decanted it for 6 to 7 hours and served it in a Burgundy glass.

The bouquet shows the warm notes of perfectly ripe Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. I thought of vintage 2009 at first, as 2003 Sociando-Mallet does not have the typical 2003 Rhône like heat in its nose. Very clean and attractive blackcurrant notes, ripe but not overripe and cooked. Tannins have already softened, the wine with its 13% Vol. is really delicious now but can be kept at least 10 to 15 years from now. In my opinion a great success of the vintage.
