The Story

The Clos-Saint-Urbain covers 5.5ha on the western part of the Grand Cru Rangen, close to the old town of Thann and right above the river Thur. The volcanic rocky soil and incredible steep slope bring an unmistakable personality and character to the wines from Rangen. Written Notes

(5.2 g/l total acidity with a pH of 3.7): Bright gold-tinged yellow. Rich, intense aromas of apple, pear and botanical herbs, with a noteworthy smoky element typical of Rangen wines. Enters the mouth fresh and juicy, then turns more austere and tightly coiled, showing little in the way of Pinot Gris fruit flavors; rather, this wine showcases a very savory, stony quality on its long, dry finish (only 5 g/l residual sugar). A completely different year from 2013 weather-wise, 2011 was hot throughout the growth cycle, but without water shortages. The high number of sunshine hours meant that grapes in the Rangen had to be harvested earlier than usual to avoid too strong a drop in total acidity. It follows that yields were low in 2011 (just 25 hectoliters per hectare). Only the oldest Rangen Pinot Gris vines (those planted in 1963) were used to produce the 2011, as the Humbrechts felt the younger-vines components would have compromised the wine's richness and complexity. Olivier told me that the fermentation was very quick (only four weeks long) and he felt that long lees contact was necessary to add a rounder mouthfeel to what was a very powerful (15.6% alcohol), almost tough wine.
