Vintage 2002

A cold winter and a mild late spring cued for a perfect June allowing early and fast flowering. Outstanding weather conditions prevailed and the season went on without dramatic turns. Rains in August raised concerns regarding gray rot, but finally sunshine and dry conditions throughout September resulted in an abundant crop of largely healthy fruit (11,930 kg/ha). Tighter, lighter but also more elegant than, for example, the abundant ultra-generous 2000 vintage. Interesting to see that extreme growers just like Egly Oriet can make powerful wines from vintages when most producers do lightweighters and vice versa.

Egly-Ouriet är i dag den bästa PInoit Noir-odlaren alla kategorier. Vid två olika kvällar under december ’ramlade’ denna under sköna rika & stora champagne in under min radar. 118 månader på sûr-lie hade verkligen gjort susen. Intressant att se att extremodlare som Francis Egly kan göra mäktigare viner från årgångar då massorna gör lättviktare och tvärtom. Vinet är krutrökigt, rostat och mineralinfluerat. Vinet klingar ut i en sanlöst nötig finish. Han är duktig surgubben från Ambonnay! dég mai’13.
