The Story

Here is a young red that will benefit from time in the bottle. That said, it’s a remarkable cabernet blend with voluminous red berry aromatics, deep opulent blackcurrant, dark plum and redcurrant characters with hints of licorice, chocolate and wild brambles. It has layer after layer of concentrated flavours, power and density, balanced by substantial fine-grain tannins. Complex, arresting and satisfying.

Wine Information

Grosset Gaia 2006

After a Gaia that was more approachable at a younger age from the 2005 vintage, it’s back to the more austere, structured, densely packed red with which we are familiar in 2006. Written Notes

Dark red with a crimson rim. Dry herbs, animal skins, spices, a hint of chocolate. Some mint on the palate and a tiny vegetal note. All adds to a most complex wine. The tannins are very fine and well managed, leading to good grip. Nice length. A very impressive wine. No surprise when revealed – this is surely the finest Cabernet-dominant wine made in the Clare Valley.
  • 93p

The strong, deep purple hue introduces an outstanding young wine, driven by layers of red and blackcurrant fruit, backed by fine but persistent tannins, quality French oak and a hint of black olive. It has evolved well over the past two years, but is still medium- to full-bodied, and will slim down to medium-bodied in the decades to come. 14% alc; screwcap, drink to 2031 – James Halliday 96p

Deep colour. Blackcurrant, violet, toast and graphite aromas with some espresso notes. lovely pure cassis and roasted-chestnut flavours, with fine- grained, al-dente tannins and underlying chocolaty notes. Finishes long and sweet. Bloody good. 98 points. now – 2040.
