Vintage 2015

The 2015 Harvest by Clive Coates MW

The bad news is Chablis. In the early hours of Tuesday 1st September a severe storm hit the Chablis area. From Irancy up to the grands crus of Blanchots and Les Clos a swathe of hail – some hailstones as large as golf balls – has affected some 100 hectares of the vineyard. In all 97 mm of rain fell in six hours. The weather then cleared, threatening rot, and most growers rushed out to harvest before it wa...

There is a mild hint of exotic tea to the apple, white flower and soft spice nuances. The refined, precise and intense medium weight flavors exude ample minerality on the sneaky long finish where a hint of mandarin orange appears. This is really lovely and the natural class of a fine Genevrières is very much in evidence.

I have been visiting Henri Boillot for more than 15 years now and it seems that with each passing vintage when I discuss with him which of the "big three" communes performed the best, two things are increasingly clear: the first is that he always believes that Puligny has outperformed Meursault and Chassagne and the second is that he is becoming increasingly disenchanted with the quality that he finds in Chassagne; in fact to the point that he will no longer offer any wines, with the exception of grands crus, from the commune. As to the 2015 vintage, Boillot observed that "if there was one critical variable to make good wine in this vintage, it was to preserve the acidity. The growing season was easy to manage as we made only six treatments total as opposed to the 9 to 15 we usually make. We chose to begin picking the whites on the 26th of August as the fruit was ripe and our sense was that there was nothing further to be gained by waiting and with every risk of losing even more acidity. There wasn't much malic acid and the malos were already finished by January. We also did everything possible to preserve the gas in the wines which helps to preserve the freshness. As to the style of the 2015 whites, I would compare them to the 1990s." Kudos, once again, are merited by Boillot as he has made some of the best whites coming out of this vintage. While no one will mistake them for the more energetic and elegant 2014s (REVISITED IN BOTTLE BELOW), they are less obviously creatures of their vintage than most 2015s.
