Vintage 1979

Burgundy: Spring started rather cold, but in May, warmer weather arrived to get flowering off to a good start. Normal, warm summer conditions followed, with the exception of a severe local storm in June which minimized crop sizes in Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny. The harvest began at the end of September. The fine, elegant wines were just a little sweeter than the '78s; The Côte de Beaune did particularly well.

Received a few years after release. Level: ca. 3 cm below cork

White Burgundy can hardly be any better than this, surely not at Premier Cru level. Sadly the last bottle of this in my cellar. 1979 has always been a truly great white Burgundy vintage and this bottle proved why. Healthy light yellow colour, even with some green reflections. The nose of a much younger great Chardonnay, lots of minerality, very pure, amazing flavours of chalk and dried herbs. I served it blind and some thought it could a famous Grand Cru from Chablis, all agreed on a maximum 8 year-old wine. Perfect balance between finest fruit and acidity, its freshness at age 39 was amazing, especially when you think of all the awful young wines with premox we all regularly encounter. The wine held well in the glass, consider yourself lucky when you have or find it, as it will provide outstanding drinking pleasure for at least another decade. This has the class of old Ramonet Grand Cru from the 70's.
