Matt Day’s second vintage in charge of this iconic sweet wine marks an evolution in style , with the addition of essencia and slightly less alcohol and residual sugar. It’s another lovely VdC, showing flavours of tarte tatin, orange marmalade, baking spices and subtle oak ageing. 95/100 Tim Atkin.

The Story

This wine has always been popular among the greatest writers and politicians: Napoléon Bonaparte had some bottles delivered weekly at Saint-Hélène during his exile, Charles Baudelaire mentionned it in its famous Les Fleurs du Mal, it was appreciated by Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, the King of England George IV and the Queen Elizabeth II, but also George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens, Nelson Mandela and so on.

Wine Information

Due to a prolonged winter and cool spring, the growing season was late in 2013 and delayed bud burst by up to 2weeks. Ideal conditions prevailed with moderate day time and cool night time temperatures. This together with a dry season ensured for perfect ripening and raisining of the Muscat de Frontignan.

Inside Information

In 1980 the Jooste family purchased a run-down Klein Constantia that was in dire need of restoration. Lengthy soil preparation, replanting of vines and building a new cellar was all necessary. Built in time for the maiden 1986 vintage, the house subsequently received a Merit Award from the Cape Provincial Institute of Architects. In 2011, Zdenek Bakala and Charles Harman acquired the farm and, along with new Managing Director of the estate Hans Astrom, aim to build on the tremendous success acheived by the Jooste family.
