The Paper Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc 2023 ($36) – Many years ago, on a trip to our extraordinary Great Barrier Reef, I was convinced to try diving. This might seem like an obvious thing to do for many, but I much prefer my immediate environment to be shark-free. Still, in I went. I will never forget the amazing experience and the colours, but most of all, to see a live Nautilus swimming (and yes, they do go backwards) off into the deep (this even impressed our marine biologist guide). Having seen that, I was not game to push my luck and got straight back on the shark-free boat. So, this wine has an added attraction for me. The fruit here is from the Heritage Block on their Renwick Estate.
Pale lemon, the nose is full of citrus, spices, lemon curd notes, dried herbs and grapefruit. This is leaner and more elegant than many and has serious persistence. There is vibrant acidity, impressive balance and very good length, with the intensity running the full length. Enjoy over the next six years. 92.
