I am absolutely delighted that Penet-Chardonnet wines at last have a UK importer in the form of Scala Wine, run by Tim Hall who has often written for us about champagne, particularly about those he likes to call single-estate champagnes. This is one of their relatively few cuvées based on more than one village, in this case on brun calcaire in the Montagne de Reims Grands Crus Verzy and Verzenay. 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, mainly 2011, some oaked. The blend was bottled in April 2012 and disgorged in May 2019. Dosage 5.6 g/l.
Tiny bead and great integrity with a very pure, complex nose with a minerally whiff. Beautifully balanced for current drinking. Tense, filigree texture but not austere. Not cheap but deeply satisfying. Those seven years on the lees have really paid off.
