Vintage 2019

2019 was a year to celebrate the Douro’s remarkably resilient grape varieties in an unusually dry year. Our ability to closely monitor their varying maturation cycles and adjust our picking schedule accordingly meant we were able to deliver the best expression of the different varieties.

Written Notes

Full bottle 1,222 g. 60% Viosinho, 40% Verdelho from the Douro Superior. The juice is transferred to stainless-steel tanks where it remains for 48 hours at 8 °C for decanting. The alcoholic fermentation begins in stainless-steel tanks and the wine is then transferred to French oak barrels where fermentation continues for 45 days at 14 °C. Aged 6 months in French oak barrels, with lees stirring. Each barrel is equipped with individual rollers that allow it to be rotated so that lees stirring can take place without oxygen getting in. New barrels: 50%, used barrels 50%. French oak barrels 85%, French oak barrels with acacia heads 15%. TA 7.1 g/l, pH 3.05.

Inviting creamy citrus aroma, both pure and intense. The oak influence on the aroma is definite but subtle, just adding a light spice and mealy note. Rich and creamy on the palate, with a hint of cedary green fruits that could be the acacia influence(?) or maybe just grape varieties, and shot through with terrific citrus punch and freshness. Vibrant and long. This has really settled down since I tasted it at the beginning of this year, more integrated, deeper. (JH)
