The Story

The Running with Bulls Tempranillo is sourced from multiple growers in the western ranges, across the valley floor and into the Penrice region of the Barossa. This provides a great collection of aroma and flavour profiles to make this an interesting and varietal Barossa Tempranillo. Fermentation with yeasts indigenous to the vineyards was followed by malolactic fermentation and maturation in new and mature oak barrels. Our aim has been to showcase the stylish fruit flavours and lovely tannins of Tempranillo, and for the oak to only have a very subtle influence

Wine Information

The Running with Bulls Barossa Tempranillo is cherry red in colour with alluring and evolving aromas. A wine that begins with brambles, mocha and spices of nutmeg and cinnamon; and develops notes of sweet blueberries and tarragon. Flavours of cranberry and black cherry precede the lush liquorice and savoury ironstone tannins. Enjoy with Southern fried chicken and chipotle aioli.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

My relationship with Australian Tempranillo is uneasy to say the least.

Yet, here we have a wine that, for me, is at least varietal. Hints of choc-coffe-blueberries meets subtle violets too. A delightful aromatic expression of Tempranillo supported by a touch of malty oak.

It's medium bodied, there's a mix of red/ blue/ black fruits on show here, it is easy going, juicy and supple. Tannin is fine, backed up with a little bitter twist of cocoa at its conclusion.

Length is good, generous and sustained. To my mind it is one of the better expressions of Tempranillo in Australia, at a good price point too.

It has a twin, a Wrattonbully expression, and whilst I may consider that the *better* wine, this Barossa expression would likely bowl me over any day. A joy to drink, varietally correct, and food-friendly to boot. 91 - Very Good
