The Story

The Adelaide Hills was long considered too cool to ripen Shiraz. By the early 2000s, though, the potential for outstanding Shiraz from the right sites in the Adelaide Hills was compelling, and the first Shaw + Smith Shiraz was made in the 2002 vintage. Since then, Shiraz in the Hills has gone from strength to strength, its hallmarks being fragrance, intensity, and medium bodied elegance.

Written Notes

The unison of the earth and the flowers that grow in, spicey a hint of meatiness - whole bunch evident - combiner floral aspects: rose hip, hibiscus.

Lighter touch on entry, a fine-grain of mouth coating, powdery tannin. Gives length, stature and volume. Freshening acidity brings the wine home, paradoxically racing to a gentle conclusion 92

The most opulent S & S Shiraz in some time and such a success. Coffee mocha raspberry, the hearty palate un-Hills like but not overwrought. You could almost pick it as western Victorian even. Black jubes, black texta. It’s so plush. Less spice, more plush. It’s a genuinely high quality Shiraz, if somewhat atypical. Another winner from Shaw & Smith. Best drinking: Good now, and likely 15+ years. 18.5/20, 94/100. 14.5%, $39. Would I buy it? Worth a bottle.
