The Story

In 1997 Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle, Chairman of Vina Concha y Toro forged a partnership with a view to create an exceptional Chilean equivalent of a Bordeaux Grand Cru Classe. This wine was to be called called Almaviva.

Located in the Maipo Valley, in Chile's central zone, the Puente Alto vineyards behind Almaviva are recognized for offering ideal conditions for growing the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. It is here that 85 hectares have been reserved exclusively for Almaviva.

Since Almaviva's launch in 1998 the wines popularity has rocketed. Now seen as one of the finest wines in the world Almaviva kudos has to go to winemaker Tod Mostero for producing a wine of such consistent high quality.

Wine Information

James Suckling: The newest vintage of one of Chile’s icon wines, Almaviva 2013, is terrific quality due to its wonderful finesse, depth, and length, giving the wine a beautiful purity of fresh fruit and clarity. The winery says that the outstanding quality is due to the cool grape-growing season in the Puente Alto region near the capital of Santiago and the longest harvest on record that lasted from April 17 to May 23. You can certainly taste all this in the wine due to the finesse and intensity of fruit that underlines the cool climate prowess of Chile on a whole. I find the 2013 very close in quality to the superb 2010. And I find the 2013 extremely attractive to drink now. It’s a blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 19% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot and 1% merlot.

The wine of Almaviva, owned by Bordeaux first-growth Château Mouton Rothschild and Chile’s Concha y Toro, is released each September in Bordeaux with a number of top wine merchants, just like the top names of the region such as Château Margaux or Château Cheval Blanc.

Written Notes

Medium deep colour.. Expressive and charming nose of violets, tar, cherry and licorice. Still very primary in character. Perfumery seduction continues on the palate. Medium bodied palate with crisp acidity and firm powdery tannic backbone. Elegant and seductive in style and Surprisingly open already today. However, this Almaviva has the power and balance to age magnificently for a decade or two.
