Vintage 2016

SPAIN 2016 will be remembered for the piles of grapes thrown to the ground in Rioja. Our most renowned wine region, as well as Navarra and most appellations in Castilla y León, registered very high yields in sharp contrast with Mediterranean wine regions where drought led to below-average production levels. The gloomy picture came from Ribeira Sacra in Galicia where severe hail hit the area of Doade in August and destroyed 400,000 kilos of gra...

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is cherry red and youthful. On the nose it is open, complex and fresh. The taste is elegant, fresh, voluptuous, fruity, perfumed, and dry, warming, with medium tannin, with silky tannins, and high in acidity, medium-bodied and with multi-dimensional structure. On the palate it is layered and has pepper, raspberry, herbs, toasty, earthy, floral and mineral flavours. The finish is long and vibrant. This wine is outstanding. I paid around 50-100€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years, decant at least 30min before tasting and this is a good invest wine. Good value for money. I do recommend.

Viñedo de Páganos. Grapes from a small plot of just 2 hectares located in La Rioja Alavesa and worked with minimal intervention, which is called Finca La Nieta. The Eguren family makes this wine as part of their Viñedo de Paganos project as a single varietal Tempranillo aged for 15 months.

La Nieta 2016, presents a freshness far from the crianzas of the area, something that was still noticeable in the tasting of the 2014 vintage. Well, in this 2016 it is even more emphasized.

In the tasting, it leaves us an intense cherry color, with a medium-high layer and well covered, which lets us glimpse in the movement of the glass violet edges of this 2016. Sharpness and intensity with clear presence of red fruit, spicy touches from the barrel, as well as hints of chocolate and also something mineral. All very well balanced.

The fruit reappears everywhere , with good acidity that gives it great persistence and a really long passage through the palate. Complex and at the same time perfectly structured.
