The Story

Vieux Chateau Certan is one of Pomerol's oldest and most exalted estates, having produced wine since at least the mid 1740s. On the Belleyme Map, published in 1785, the property was listed as "Sertan" and was owned by the Demays, a family of established Bordeaux negociants. A century later, ownership passed to a banker, Charles de Bousquet, who sold it to George Thienpont in 1924.

The family diversified in 1979 when Marcel and Gérard Thienp...

Vintage 1945

The best vintage in the world – 1947 or 1945? Tastingbook has tasted all the best wines from these two great vintages.

If wine producers from different regions were asked to name the best vintages in their wine history, most would name 1947 or 1945 as one of the greats. If we then compared them, there would probably only be one vintage that most, if not all, producers had named on the list – 1947.

We wanted to test this theory and we tas...

Written Notes

Vieux Château Certan 1945/ This famous neighbour of Château Pétrus has been owned by the Thienpont family since 1924. The historical estate existed already before the French Revolution and thanks to its long history it has carried Pomerol’s reputation longer than any other estate. It had been the flagship wine of Pomerol few centuries before the legendary Pétrus took the number one position. The estate is located on the high plateau of Pomerol where its soil constitutes from gravel and clay with little sand on topsoil and iron-rich clay in subsoil. Thanks to the gravel Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are planted in higher proportions at Vieux Château Certan than at any other Pomerol estate. This also makes the taste of Vieux Château Certan very different from other Pomerols. The 1945 vintage was a great one but very limited due to a severe frost in May. The vintage was otherwise outstanding and yielded very tannic wines for long-term ageing. Thanks to the blend of slowly mellowing Cabernets, Vieux Château Certan requires a long time to reach the optimum ripeness. Moderately dark ruby colour. Very refined nose with earthy tones, leather, horse saddle, ripe blackcurrants, cedar, and hints of mint. Elegant medium-bodied structure, still firm tannins, lively acidity and pure black fruit flavours. Very elegant, long lingering finish shows complexity and sophistication. The wine is very appealing to drink now but it will improve even over three more decades.
