The Story

Scharzhofberg is one of the most famous sites in Germany and was probably planted by the Romans. Situated in Wiltingen, it is removed from the Saar in a side valley and faces due south. It is both very steep (30-60% grade) and high (590-918 ft.). The soil, formed from gray Devonian slate decomposition, is very deep with no bedrock. Like many of the best European vineyards, Scharzhofberg is very well drained but still holds sufficient moisture.

Written Notes

Bottle came directly Egon Muller´s cellar. Perfect condition, and decanted 30 minutes. The colour is now tunred to an almost deep amber but still shows all of the concentration, intensity and elegance that it did in its youth. There is now some maturity, spicy-honeyed botrytis and flavors and aromas of dried fruits on the nose with a generous mineral sensation on the long finish. A complex mix of minerals and smokiness with excellent balance and the velvety mouthfeel that gains extra points. Well balanced and enjoyable.
