The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean...

Vuosikerta 1929

The year 1929 was an extraordinary year in the Bordeaux vineyards as well as on Wall Street. When the U.S. stock market collapsed in 1929, it produced several undesirable effects abroad, particularly in Europe, where many countries had not fully recovered from the aftermath of World War I. In Germany, the economic disaster and resulting social dislocation contributed to the rise of Adolf in the United States, there were 16 million unemployed –...

we began our Bordeaux portion as well, thanks to a 1929 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion.  Its nose was very intense with lots of benevolent barnyard, game, wheat, band-aid and gravel.  The fruit was very gamey, and its mesquite flavors came out in a creamy and horsey way - that's a good horse, by the way lol.  There was ‘more opulence and richness’ and lots of grassy goodness with cereal and citrus skin on the finish.  Grapefruit! That's what it was, and the horse continued to gallop away on its finish (95).

La Mission Haut-Brion 1929/ Excellent looking necociant-bottled magnum. Level was high-shoulder. Decanted 1.5 hours. Full, very hopeful and youthful colour. Perhaps a little quiet on the nose, but otherwise there was plenty of elegance around. Fantastically rich, a little on the dry side, but very aromatic and voluptuous. Previous bottles were more fruity and more forceful. But there is still some length, complexity and spicy aromatic flavours for enjoyment. Finnish is positive and quite long. This magnum was not the best example of this excellent wine, at least all the château-bottled wines that we have tasted has been better in every way. At best very good and enthusiastic example of this classic Château.

Moderately intense, brick red colour. Beautiful, seductive and intense nose with majestic claret style – black currants, chocolate and cedar. Intense, concentrated palate reveals an energetic wine with vivid acidity, silky tannins and long mineral finish with profound cedar and black currant flavours. Very dense and youthful wine for its age. A splendid wine that is leaving short only in complexity of flavours. Decant for 15 minutes and serve at 18°C with Beef Entrecôte, deer fillet, or roasted duck. JL 95p (4/2010)
