The Story
Grand Siecle was created in 1959 and was the world's first multivintage prestige cuvée. Its concept relies on three vintages, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir exclusively from grand cru sites and only exceptional vintages. The name of the wine is a tribute to le Grand Siècle (the great century), that is, the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV, when France had its most brilliant era.
The eyecatching bottle shape has taken inspiration from the first hand-blown bottles made during that 17th century. The bottle's elegant long narrow neck gives off a melodic clucking when served that is unique to this type of bottle.
Laurent-Perrier was founded in 1812, but the great journey towards what Laurent-Perrier is today began when Marie-Louise Lanson de Nonancourt bought the house in 1939. She ran the small wine company that produced 80,000 bottles on her own, but after the World War II in 1945 her son, veteran Bernard de Nonancourt took over the company. He turned Laurent-Perrier one of the most prestigious champagne houses in the world.
Today, the volume is just over 7.5 million per year and in the cellar company has 45 million bottles in storage.In 1959, the Grand Siècle was introduced as the world's first multivintage prestige cuvée. In 1968, Bernard de Nonancourt created Cuvée Rosé, to make rosé and let the red grapes macerate to give color and character had not been done before. The grapes in the Grand Siècle are picked from 11 of Champagne's finest Grand Cru vineyards, for Pinot Noir among others; Ambonnay, Bouzy and Mailly and for Chardonnay among others; Avize, Cramant and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Only grapes from the finest locations in the vineyards have been selected to produce this champagne that has been produced with wine from three top vintages. After a careful selection of the grapes, the wine is vinified according to the champagne method. The wine then lies on its yeast precipitate for 15 years before disgorging. The dosage is 7 grams of sugar per liter.
