History

Champagne Deutz, one of the founding members of the Assocation des Grand Marques was established in 1838 by William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann.  The house is based in Aÿ, the cru of oldest renown in the Champagne winegrowing region. Apart from extensive highly rated vineyards owned by the house itself, the present ownership, the Louis Roederer Group, is strengthening the company’s relations with vignerons in the best crus, ensuring that all of them constantly adhere to the viticultural practices that make a crucial contribution to the house style. Fabrice Rosset is the elegant PDG who oversees this lovely house and its sister house, Delas Frères in the Rhône Valley.

Total production is about two million bottles with 75% of the grapes brought in from Grand and Premier Cru vineyards. Its estate is spread over five villages, including some of the most beautiful locations in all Champagne, and as such Deutz has developed a rich, round, fruit-filled style that is vinous yet refreshing. Each blend boasts the same elegant signature bottle, in which it was aged on its lees for a minimum of three years – a guarantee of quality from the Brut Classic to the prestige cuvees.

Vineyards

Today, Deutz upholds the traditions of fine champagne-making handed down through five generations. Owning a significant portion of its own vineyards, Deutz selects only top quality grapes from 275 acres of vineyards in the finest crus of Champagne. The wines are slowly and carefully aged in Deutz’ chalk-walled cellars far beneath the historic village of Aÿ.

Deutz Vintage Champagne 1904-2008 / Deutz 1959 Wagner, Mahler, Brahms, Rubens, Churchill, St. Peter's in Rome, Karelia – they would all pale in the face of the monumental dark power of this wine! What Aÿ muscles and what a truffle-garnished cannonade of autumn flavours.

Richard Juhlin / The number One champagne expert in the world, Pro (Sweden)  tasted  1 wines  from  Deutz . In a tasting of  29 wines

Many prestige champagnes debuted in 1959 vintage, for example, Dom Ruinart and Pol Roger Blanc de Chardonnay. A large harvest of champagnes, that often ended up above 13 percent alcohol because of the extremely hot summer. The wines have proven to be very sustainable, despite the low acid. Power and concentration are great regardless if the wines are dominated by Chardonnay or pinot noir. A wonderful champagne year in its style!

Essi Avellan MW / Editor of the Champagne magazine, Pro (Finland)  tasted  1 wines  from  Deutz . In a tasting of  26 wines

KRUG CLOS DU MESNIL 1995 / The toasty nose, with a suggestion of oak, is both subtle and layered. The structure is exceptional; the rich fruitiness of the vintage is combined charmingly with the stylish acidity of the Chardonnay. The concentration is perfect and the length of the taste does not leave any room for improvement. The wines of the 1995 vintage can usually be enjoyed at a young age but the rather unattached aroma of oak should be allowed to integrate into the fruitiness of the wine over time.

Luciano Cesare, Wine Dealer (Italy)  tasted  2 wines  from  Deutz . In a tasting of  23 wines

Dom Ruinart 1982 / Good looking normal size bottle, in an excellent condition with 2 cm level ullage below the cork. Colour is straw, and looking bright, healthy and medium. On the nose it is intense, fresh, seductive and round. The taste is fresh, rich, fruity, medium-bodied, with balanced, complex, concentrated structure and youthful. The finish is medium long, round, gentle and vibrant. This wine is sophisticated and fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 15min before tasting. Good value for money.

We were specially invited to a timeless and luxurious Lunch at Deutz with amazing Vinothèque-wines. As one of the greatest high spots of the journey we would taste one of the very few remaining magnums of Deutz Blanc de Noirs d´Aÿ Vinothèque. One of the best and most famous champagnes in the world with an auction price of 14 000 euros.

Juha Lihtonen, Sommelier (Finland)  tasted  2 wines  from  Deutz . In a tasting of  58 wines

“Astonishing tasting of the best champagne of the decade '90s. So great champagnes in perfect condition to be enjoyed today but which hold extremely well decades to come! It was a tight battle of the 1st place. On my rankings there were two winners - Dom Pérignon P2 1995 and Cristal 1996. Both were amazing 98 points champagnes! The biggest surprises were Besserat de Bellefon 1998 and once again Palmer&Co champagnes with their charming quality and consistency.”

“Paul Bara Special Club 2004 / Goodness gracious, what a surprise I received when I poured my club bottle and the wine was deep pink! I had absolutely no idea that there was such a thing as Special Club Rosé nowadays! One can only offer one's congratulations. The wine is very reminiscent of the non-vintage variety with somewhat greater weight, and refinement rich in mineral. Otherwise it gives the feeling of being just as young and unevolved. The fruitiness is vegetal with tones of beetroot and the beginnings of intense tones of wild bird pâté. When the wine is aired a great Pinot roundness makes its appearance.”

Rajiv Singhal / Fine Wine Magazine India, Wine Writer (India)  tasted  1 wines  from  Deutz . In a tasting of  10 wines

“Monteverro Tinata vertical - all the vintages. This Cotes du Rhone blend pays hommage to owner Georg Weber's mother, Tina. Red fruit aromas, such as cherry, raspberry, and cranberry, harmoniously mingle with subtle hints of florals, herbs, and spices, such as ginger, cinnamon, and coriander, and geranium, lavender, and rose. The entrance is fresh, but finishes sweet with nuances of grenadine and a touch of cassis. Fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels, Monteverro Tinata is aged in 40% new French oak barrels and 60% egg-shaped concrete tanks for 16 months.”
