The Story

Monfortino is the very first Barolo made in what has come to be known as the classic style. Earlier Barolos were generally sold in either cask or demijohn, and meant for early drinking. Giacomo decided to create a Barolo with great aging potential. His first wine wine was a 120 Barolo Riserva, and he soon adopted the name Monfortino in honor of his home village Montorte d'Alba.
In 1959 Giovanni Conterno began making the wine at his family domaine, taking over from his father Giacomo. The legendary Barolos he made in 1964, 1971, 1978, 1985 and 1990 have left their mark in Italian wine history.

Written Notes

The 1961 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva took it up another notch, with a sweeter and smokier style, almost like some BBQ ribs.  It was ‘too much’ for at least one, but I found this wine to be incredibly complex.  It continued to develop aromas and flavors of licorice, tea, tar and smoke.  Its acidity exerted itself in fine fashion, and its sandy and desert-y personality let you know that nature was still in charge (97).

“Smoking” is how Wine Director Hristo Zisovski described it. You have dark fruit, and a bit of caramel, plums, cherry and smoke on the nose. It opens with nicely integrated tannins, well resolved acidity, cherries and dark chocolate as it approaches the mid palate. The wine is deep, gorgeously textured and layered, just a tad linear compared to the vivacious sex appeal of the ’64, but on its own merits, it is impeccably balanced, more gracefully opulent almost as it moves towards a finish that shows it has thrown off the flamboyance of its youth (when it was compared with 50’s Pomerol), and now is maturing with far greater almost quasi-Burgundian aplomb with more delicately perfumed fruit. 96 Points+

Garnet with orange rim. Coffee, licorice, dry notes, intense. High acidity, ripe tannins, feels youthful on the fruit, but seems to start to dry up in the finish. 90

John Kapon / CEO / Ackerr Merrall & Condit, Pro (United States)  tasted  Barolo Monfortino Riserva 1961  ( Giacomo Conterno )

"The Haut Brion was paired with a glorious bottle of 1961 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva. Roberto Conterno happened to be in New York this week, and I saw him on a couple occasions, but we did not get to share this beauty. This was clearly a special wine at first sniff. There was a leathery kink here that felt like a good spanking. There was ample flesh to handle it, along with aromas of tobacco, old rose and old book. A kiss of citrus rounded out the nose. The palate was steamy and sexy with great grip and delicious flavors. Its acid lingered impressively, and there were layers of complexity to its flavors. Someone joked that it was the kind of wine that could leave you with a 10k dental bill. It’s worth it (97)."
